the story of Martha page 15 by ric gustafson
Martha stood next to the Temple steps and listened to Jesus teach on forgiveness.
All of a sudden, a group of scribes and Pharisees came in and were dragging a young woman in front of them. They stopped in front of Jesus and forced the young woman unto her knees.
One of the Pharisees stepped forward. " Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of adultery".
Martha observed the sneers on the mens faces.
" Moses, in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned". He stared at Jesus. " What do you say?".
The crowd was silent.
Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground. Then he raised himself up and stared at the men. " He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her".
The scribes and Pharisees looked at each other in shock. One by one each dropped their stone and walked away.
Jesus looked up and noticed that the unruly crowd was gone. " Woman, where are your accusers?".
Martha looked around and saw no one.
" Has no one condemned you?".
" No one Lord".
" Neither do I".
Someone threw a cloak around her and helped her up.
" Go and sin no more".
