Billie Burke was the daughter of a circus mime. She was groomed for the stage. She became the darling of Broadway before World War I. At a New Year's Eve party in 1913, she met Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. He was the creator of the Ziegfeld Follies. Her friends warned her that he had no money. She eloped with him anyway. It was not an easy marriage.
The stock market crash of 1929 depleted their wealth. Ziegfeld died in 1932. This left Billie deep in debt. At the age of 48, Billie moved to Hollywood to become a character actress. The role of Glinda for Billie at 54 gave her a chance to relive her earlier career. Billie Burke died in 1970 at the age of 84. She had a successful film career with over 90 film credits.
