Jesus is telling a story about the cost of Christian discipleship. Jesus is telling us in this story that the cost is everything. It cannot be half. Jesus says that everything must be surrendered. Jesus does not want us to start something and then not finish it.
Jesus says the struggle will be hard and long. If we are unwilling to go the distance, Jesus does not want us to begin at all. It takes courage and commitment. Jesus will give us both.
