Titanic 2018 page 2 by ric Gustafson
It was early in 1908 that officials of the White Star Company announced that they were going to build a ship of staggering dimensions. The ship was called the Titanic. In the summer of 1909, the keel was laid at the Harland and Wolff yards in Belfast Ireland. The designer was Lord Pirrie.
It was to be the sister ship of the Olympic. The Titanic measured 45,328 tons. It was to be commanded by Captain E J Smith. He was a White Star admiral. The Titanic was 882 and a half feet long. It had four funnels and eleven decks. She was able to accommodate 2500 passengers.
The crew size was 860. Her hull plates were 36 feet long. The rudder weighed 100 tons and the anchors weighed fifteen and a half tons each. Three million rivets held the ship together. The double bottom extended the full length of the ship. It was the ship of dreams.
