By the end of the last ice age, the traditional supply of salt changed. Because of a changing habitat, livestock needed an external source of salt. Modern milk cows required 80 pounds of salt per year. Cattle needed 6.6 pounds. During the Neolithic period was intense economic and cultural development. Man needed access to land but ownership of it. Man needed laws to protect their work and property. During this period, salt was used for feeding ourselves, livestock, curing and preserving food. Salt became essential to survival. It was the first local food and exotic one. At times salt became currency and a based economy.
