names of God: Friend of Sinners

names of God: Friend of Sinners by ric gustafson

Matthew 11:19- ' Behold a friend of publicans and sinners'

This term refers to God the Son. In this passage from the Gospel, Jesus is pointing out that just like John the Baptist, he is not appreciated for the people that he spends time with. Jesus puts up with scorn, ridicule and death to be a friend of sinners. Jesus associated with prostitutes and tax collectors who were shunned by Jewish society.
Jesus as the friend of sinners wants us to say ' Jesus, I am a sinner be my friend".

Mr Firecracker prelude

Mr Firecracker prelude by ric gustafson

Erich Holmes yawned as he took off his black workpants and put them into his dresser. He glanced at the clock radio on the small wooden table by their queen size bed. He noticed that it was 4:00 and his tee time was 5:05.
He put his jean shorts on and then saw them slip off of his legs. ' That's strange' he thought as he tightened his belt. It was as if he was losing weight without even trying. He yawned again as he put an old ball cap on and then put his cell phone, keys and wallet into his pockets. He yawned again because the previous night he had gotten up twice because he was extremely thirsty. The second time he had to go to the bathroom because of the water he had drank.
The thing that worried him the most was that all of these things were happening to him at the same time.

In 1946 after the Second World War, presweetened cereals began to fill the supermarket aisles. In 1949, Nabisco's Jim Rex began to dip puffed cereal into a mixture of corn syrup and honey. The company called the cereal Popped Wheat Honnies and later Wheat Honeys.
After Sugar Crisp was introduced in 1949, other presweetened cereals came such as Sugar Smacks, Frosted Flakes, Cocoa Krispies and Cocoa Puffs.
In the early 1950's, television came and a new marketing tool began. Companies began using children's programming to hawk their products. In the 1950's, cereal advertising relied on westerns and space shows and during the 1960's, cartoons and sitcoms.
By the 1970's, the cereal industry would change forever.

In the late 1930's, Mildred Day and Malitta Jensen worked for Kelloggs. For two weeks, they worked on a recipe that would become a popular snack. The recipe was simple just marshmallows, butter and Rice Krispies. The butter and marshmallows were melted and then the Rice Krispies were stirred in. The mixture was poured into a buttered pan and then sat until firm. Then it was cut into squares.Starting in 1941, this recipe appeared on boxes of Rice Krispies cereal and newspaper ads. This tasty treat has become so popular over the years that starting in 1993, Rice Krispies Treats began to be packaged in ready made form.

the return to the land of Dante page 8

the return to the land of Dante page 8 by ric gustafson

Aaron and the elderly man exited the tunnel. Hot smoke and flaming ash blew onto their clothes. All of a sudden, a hot air started blowing them around as if they were inside a tornado.
As they flew around, an arm came up and stopped them against a side wall.
A man grinned. " Hold onto the wall".
As Aaron and the old man held onto the stone wall, they watched as several people flew by them. " You told me you loved me" said a man as he and a woman flew by us. " You promised that you would never leave me". A woman flew by. " How could you run off with that woman" she screamed as her husband flew by me next. " How could you".
The elderly man caught Aaron and pulled him down next to a wooden door.
" What was that?" Aaron asked as he tried to catch his breath.
" That was circle two for carnal sinners" was the old man's reply as he kicked in the wooden door and walked in. " Now we are heading toward circle three where the gluttons live".

Between 1916 and 1948, cereals such as Rice Krispies, Raisin Bran, Wheaties and All Bran were introduced to the market. In 1904, a General Mills inventor named Lester Borchardt  used an air gun to make puffed cereal and thus Kix was born.
Cheerios which General Mills claims is the first ready to eat oat cereal came at this time also. This cereal has been loved by so many kids and adults alike for decades yet has never had an official spokesperson.
What made Rice Krispies so successful over the years has been it's slogan of Snap Crackle and Pop. The cereal got it's nickname of the talking cereal.
Wheaties has been the heavyweight of the cereal world for a long time and is known for it's breakfast of champions on it's boxes.
The heavyweights of the cereal industry remain Rice Krispies, Cheerios, Raisin Bran and Wheaties.

In 1886, The Western Health Reform Institute in Battle Creek Michigan hired a Battle Creek native and son of a broom maker, John Harvey Kellogg. He had an idea that ready to eat cereals should be made available at grocery stores. Eventually, Kellogg took over the hospital and called it the Battle Creek Sanitarium.
One day in 1894, Kellogg's brother Will Keith was experimenting in the test kitchen and left a pot of boiling wheat on the stove overnight. The concoction that resulted in a crispy wheat flake that was rolled thin and baked was first called Granose and later Corn Flakes. In 1906, the plant was named the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company and eventually Kellogg's in 1925.

Late one evening, Nehemiah walked through the back door. " Simeon, how are Sarah's skills progressing?".
Father took a mouthful of some soup she had prepared for him. " I believe her scribing skills are coming better than her cooking skills".
" That's good" was his response as he smiled. " Today, I acted in Sarah's best interest".
Sarah stared at her cousin. " What have you done Nehemiah?".
" Sarah is going to be the queen's senior scribe".
Simeon stared at Nehemiah. " How could this be?".
" I told the queen that I knew a woman who was a very talented senior scribe" he said as he sat down on a cushion. " She agreed to try Sarah out for a period of time".
" I will never see my daughter again".
" You will be able to see Sarah at the palace anytime you wish".
Nehemiah looked at his young cousin. " Sarah, will you at least try it?".
" Yes".

" Good". He scratched his dark beard in thought. " Has anybody seen Stuart?".
" No General but some of Hill's troops noticed Union cavalry in Gettysburg".
" What does General Hill think?".

Nearer my God to Thee: Wallace Hartley by ric gustafson

At five feet ten inches, Wallace Hartley was a good choice for a bandleader. He was born June 2 1878 and was raised in Lancashire. Wallace's father, Albion Hartley was a member of the Bethel Independent Methodist Chapel and Wallace was raised a Methodist. He learned music from his father who had joined the choir at their church.
In July of 1909, Wallace joined the Luisitania and it broke the record for a west crossing of the Atlantic. While on board, Wallace and the other orchestra members played on the two story balcony while passengers ate below. In October of 1910, he was asked to become the bandmaster on the Mauretania.

Psalm 72:6- ' He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass

This term refers to God the Son. The phrase rain upon mown grass refers to a natural life giving event. This phrase also means a cycle of life, death and rebirth. King David was advanced in years when he wrote these words. He was recalling the trials put before him and rejoicing that God always raised him up again. Our lives are like grass, we grow and then are cut down in season. Jesus Christ is the gentle rain that brings us back to vibrant life again.

John Buford sat on his horse in the cemetery and looked down toward the deserted streets of Gettysburg. He could see the Seminary on the far left side of town and the road next to it jamming up with rebel infantry. He heard a noise and turned. Brigade commander Bill Gamble stopped his horse next to his.
" John, that 's rebel infantry".
" I know" he replied as he looked through the glasses. " My troopers are in town".
Gamble looked at the ridge surrounding the cemetery. " John, this is fabulous ground we could fight here".
Buford lowered the glasses. " I don't believe it".
" What is it John?".
He handed him the glasses. " The rebel infantry have turned around and started back toward the west".
Gamble looked through the glasses. " That is strange".
Buford wrote a note to John Reynolds telling him that his troopers were occupying the town and have seen large numbers of rebel infantry nearby. He knew that this high ground was a good ground for a fight and that his men would be the first to defend it.

" Sure Josh" he replied. He took off his earphones and put them on his desk. " Please have a seat".
" Thanks".
" What's on your mind Josh?".
" First of all, I enjoyed your sermon on false prophets" he said as he gathered his thoughts. " I felt strange when I shook Homer's hand".
" I did too".
" Pastor, I need your prayers" he said quietly. " Financially, things haven't changed much for the motel".
" I'll pray for you and your father as far as the financial situation goes".
" I also need prayers about my relationship with Clarice".
" I will also pray about that" Pastor Winters said as he wrote the prayer requests in a notebook he had on his desk. " Where is Clarice anyway?".

" As a matter of fact I do" Brett replied as he wondered how a complete stranger would know the trouble he was in.
" Mind if I take a look".
" No".
The stranger opened the hood and peered inside. A few minutes later, he closed the hood. " Get in and start it up".
He stared at the stranger.

Aaron and the elderly man stepped down from the last stone step unto a stone sidewalk. Aaron saw a large tower made out of rock. They began walking toward it.
" Old man, who is Minos?".
" Dante wrote that he was a lawgiver of Crete and then when he died he was appointed to judge the dead".
The two men joined countless others as they slowly walked toward the entrance to the tower.
Aaron noticed a large funnel shaped hole that went for miles. They walked through dark chambers and then into a great hall. It was then that Aaron saw the creature. He had white skin, sunken cheeks and murky eyes.
A man walked up to him.
Minos sneered. " Gluttony, greed and heresy". He laughed as he picked up the man and threw him out the door into the large hole.
Aaron heard a scream.
" Who are you?" he screamed as he pointed at me. Then he noticed the old man. " I see that you are here with another one old man". " Get out of my sight!".
They left the tower and began to walk down another dark tunnel.
" Where are we going now?".
" The circle appointed for the lascivious".

Pastor Winters took a sip of water from a glass near his bible. " The text for this morning's meditation is based on I John 4:1". He cleared his throat. " Dear friends, do not believe every spirit but test the spirits to see if they are from God because many false prophets have gone out into the world". For the next twenty minutes, Pastor Winters explained that there were many false prophets in the world and to watch out for them. When the service ended, he walked to the back of the sanctuary to greet the parishioners as they left.
" I don't think we've met" Linda said as Homer stood. " Linda Langford".
" Homer Tang" he replied with a strange grin. " May I ask what happened to your shoulder?".
" I had surgery on it a couple years ago and now I can barely lift my left arm".
" I'm sorry to hear that" he said as he put his hand on top of her left shoulder. Instant warmth came to that area. She raised her left hand to her mouth in surprise. " I hope it gets better".
" Great service" Josh said as he and Clarice shook the Pastor's hand.
" I did too" Homer said as he shook the Pastor's hand.
" Pastor Winters, this is Homer Tang" Josh said. " He's staying at the motel".
Pastor Winters felt something strange when he shook Homer's hand. A weird sensation started to come over him.

" We have arrived at our destination" the old man said as he walked up to an old cellar door that opened downward. He slowly opened the latch and carefully opened the corroded door. The narrow and steep stone stairs led down to somewhere dark.
" Aaron, be careful" the old man said as he carefully stepped onto one of the damp steps. " This tunnel is dark, wet and sometimes scary".

" Why so sad?" asked a voice from behind the car. A young bearded man wearing white coveralls with no stains on them came out from behind the car. He wiped his hands off with a towel. " I was wondering why you looked so sad?".
" Sometimes when I think about my father in law I get sad".
" Do not let your heart be troubled, trust in the Lord and believe in God".
" I know".
" Your father in law will be taken care of in God's arms" the man said with a large grin." Have a cheerful heart and pray for him".
" I already do".
" Great" he said as he gave me a hug. " Go in peace and serve the Lord".

" Didn't you help your father with the lawn?".
" Yes, Dad would come home Saturday afternoon from golf and we would work on the lawn together".
" Your father gave you something very special".
" Yes". The memory came back. " When I graduated from high school, Dad gave me a watch that belonged to his father". Another sudden memory made my face sad.
" Not all memories are happy ones".
" No" I replied as a tear began to form in my eyes. " When my father was wheeled down the hallway for his second heart surgery, I thought it was going to be the last time that I would see him".
With love in his eyes, the Creator wiped my tear away. " You don't really want to play HORSE do you?".
" No".
" Ric, you are a blessing to me and thank you for observing my commandment of honoring your father and your mother". " I will bless both you and your earthly father because you bring joy to my heart". He put his basketball back into his white duffel bag. " Go in peace". He gave me a hug goodbye.

After a month of riding her camel, Sarai was happy the caravan was stopping to rest. The caravan had stopped near the tree of Moreh which was past the town of Shechem.
The next morning, Abram walked up to the large oak tree and sank to his knees to pray. He saw a figure in white walking toward him in the distance. " My Lord and my God" Abram said loudly as the image disappeared. He heard a voice coming from the distance.
" To your offspring I will give this land".
Peace came to Abram's heart. ' To your offspring I will give this land'.
He smiled as he walked back toward the camp. He must build an altar to Adonai and give praise to his name.

names of God: Abba by ric gustafson

Mark 14:36- ' and he said Abba Father'

This term refers to God the Father. The term Abba in Aramaic means ' Father'. In this passage, Jesus is having his most intimate conversation with his Father and is asking if their is any way he can avoid his fate. Jesus was scared and was asking his Father for help. He wanted to do his Father's will and not his own. God wants us to say Abba Father because we are his children and he will listen to us.

Sarai kept up with the caravan as it moved past the city's entrance and then started moving south and west. As they rode, Sarai noticed Lot and his wife approach on their camels. Melah looked as if she was not feeling well being with child on a camel.
Later that night, Abram walked over to his wife as she rested near a campfire. " How was your first camel ride?".
" The ride was one I will not forget".
" My husband, Lot does not treat his wife the way you treat me".
" Does he mistreat her?".
" No, I don't think so".

I walked out of the side door of our church and noticed how sunny and beautiful the day was. As I started to walk home, my thoughts turned to my father in law. As I walked down the street, off to the side I noticed a large sign. It said ' Rosedale Street Car Show'. The sign said it was free so I walked up to the entrance.
As I walked in, I began to walk down the first row of cars. There were cars from the 40's to the souped up cars of today. I smiled thinking that my father in law would have loved walking through this. As I neared the end, I looked to my left and saw an unusual sight.

She picked up a schedule that was on her cluttered desk and studied it. " I'm sorry, but he's downstairs in the gym shooting baskets". She smiled at me. " Would you like to join him?".
" Sure".
She pointed me toward a nearby elevator. " Just take that elevator down to the basement".
I got on and then walked out onto a carpeted hallway. I walked into a small gym and noticed an older gray bearded gentleman shooting baskets. I recognized the Creator.
He saw me and put his basketball down. " Hi Ric". He walked over and gave me a hug.
" I hope I'm not bothering you".
" Course not" he said with a grin as he picked up the basketball. " Just shooting some baskets". " Care to join me for a game of HORSE".
" Sure". He bounced the ball to me. I took a shot and missed.
" So what's on your mind Ric?". He shot and made a basket.
" I wanted to thank you for giving me the best earthly father I could ever have". I tried the shot and missed giving myself an H.
He made a basket and then I missed giving myself HO.
" Let's stop for a while" the creator said as he walked off the court. He handed me some bottled water and began to drink some himself.
" Tell me about your earthly father".

names of God: Star out of Jacob

names of God: Star out of Jacob by ric gustafson

This term refers to God the Son. This term refers to a descendant of Jacob who will outshine all the rest. In Numbers 24:17, Balaam tells King Balak that his eyes are now open and he can see what is coming from the Israelites. Balaam knew he would see the Messiah.
Our joy as christians is knowing Jesus did come as the Star out of Jacob and one day he will return for us.

" Kill him" screamed one of the Council members.
A crowd formed and forced Stephen to walk out of the chamber. The angry mob dragged him through the Dung Gate and they entered the Valley of Death.
The crowd stopped at a grove of desert pine trees. Standing by the grove was a man named Saul of Tarsus. The Council members dropped their cloaks at Saul's feet and picked up large stones.
The first large stone hit Stephen. He lifted his eyes to heaven " Lord Jesus, receive my spirit".
The stones kept falling on Stephen. " Lord, do not charge them with this sin".
After Stephen died, the Council members took their cloaks from Saul and left.

Stephen cleared his throat. " The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham".
There was a stir among the Council members.
" Israel rebelled against God while Moses went up to receive the Law".
A bigger stirring began.
" Solomon built the first Temple but the Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands".
Pain stabbed the members of the Council.
" Why are you stiff necked and resist the Holy Spirit" Stephen said as he pointed a finger at the Council members. " You are betrayers and murderers because you do not keep the Law".
Anger came to the faces of the Council.
Stephen lifted his face toward the ceiling of the chamber. " I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God".

Stephen stood before the Sanhedrin. His hands were chained with a guard on each side.
Someone yelled from the crowd behind him. " He is trying to blasphemy against the Temple and the Law".
The long table where the Council sat was on a dais so they could stare down at the accused.
Another person yelled. " He says that Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place".
Stephen's face had a glow of no worry or fear on it.
One of the Council members yelled at Stephen. " What do you say about these accusations?".
Stephen looked up at his accusers with God's love in his eyes.

Pastor Winters was walking into his office when he saw Josh and Clarice walk through the front door.
" Hi Pastor Winters".
" Hello, I need to get ready for the service". He opened the office door to put on his robe. " I'll talk to you after it's over".
" Ok" was Josh's reply as he grinned. " I need to talk to you about something".
They sat down in a pew and saved a space for Homer. Linda Langford sat down next to them like she normally did. Josh worried about her welfare because she could barely lift her left arm due to a shoulder injury.
Just as the first hymn was about to be played, Homer quietly walked in and sat down next to Josh and Clarice. Josh noticed that Homer always had his dark sunglasses on. As the service went on, Josh also noticed that Homer never picked up the green hymnal or sang when the hymns were sung.
Twenty minutes into the service, Pastor Winters walked up to the pulpit to start his sermon.

' as is'

'as is' by ric gustafson

I walked into the store and turned left to the gift return area. There were four employees behind the return counter and all four were helping customers. I walked up to the first customer service employee who's counter space was free.
" Can I help you?" asked the young dark bearded man who looked at me very intently.
" Yes, I would like to return my salvation".
" Sorry, salvation is not a gift you can return or exchange" he replied as he rang his little bell. " Next".
Tears came to my eyes. " Surely he knew about my many flaws and sin".
" Oh yes, my father knew that" he replied with a smile. " He wanted to pay full price for your salvation anyway".
" But I am ' as is' with so many sins" I said as I wiped more tears with my hands. " Why does he want me for?".
" My father paid full price for you and gives you the best guarantee you could ever have".
" What guarantee is that?".
" My father gives you a forever guarantee that is good for all of eternity".
I looked at the clock on the wall. "I need to go".
As I left I noticed a smile on his face. " Go in peace and serve my father".

Pastor Simpson walked into his office and picked up the lamp. " You broke your promise". He threw the lamp at a nearby wall and shattered a family picture that was on it. He sat down in his chair and covered his face with his hands in shame. " God, i'm sorry" he said as tears streamed down his face. " Please help me".
As he prayed, a quiet voice told him what he needed to do. He opened his eyes and noticed an empty box near his desk. He put the lamp into the box and then taped it shut. He put the box under one arm and walked out of his office toward the front door.
" Where are you going Pastor?" Amy Johnson asked as she opened the cold icy door for him. " It's really cold outside".
He smiled. " I know I 'm just going out to put this box into the trash". He slowly walked out onto the sidewalk so he would not slip and fall. He walked around the parish and then carefully walked through the icy church parking lot. He stopped at the large green dumpster and then slowly raised the lid. He put the box on the bottom of the dumpster and then closed the lid.
As he dried the leftover tears from his face with his cold hands, he walked back into the warm church.

Pastor Simpson rubbed the lamp. A blue fog began to pour out of it's spout. A strange voice came out of the fog. " What is your wish?".
He looked around his sparse office and thought about ways he could spruce up their house. " My wish is for a huge increase in my compensation at the next yearly budget meeting".
The following January, Pastor Simpson stood by the projection console and smiled. The Pastor's compensation section was the next thing to discuss. He was confident he was going to get his big compensation increase. The lamp had granted all of his previous wishes.
After a lengthy discussion about compensation for lay personnel, Derick Jones turned toward the Pastor. " I'm sorry Pastor Simpson but the church council and myself cannot justify anything more than a cost of living increase for you and the other Pastors".
Pastor Simpson could not believe what he was hearing. " What do you mean Derick?".
" I'm sorry Pastor but because of falling attendance and tithes since last summer and rising costs to keep this parish going, we have no choice".
Enraged, Pastor Simpson quickly walked back to his office.

names of God: Spirit of Adoption

names of God: Spirit of Adoption by ric gustafson

Romans 8:15- ' but ye have received the Spirit of adoption whereby we cry Abba Father'

This term refers to God the Holy Spirit. The word Adoption means to accept something and make it your own. In this passage from Romans, Paul was telling new christians that they were now in a new relationship, one of love from God the Father. When we accept and embrace God, he adopts us into his family. As we fully accept God as our Father, he fully accepts us as family.

Pastor Simpson picked up the lamp and began to rub it. A blue fog began to come out of the spout. " What is your wish?".
" I wish that more tithes would come in to help with our budget".
The following Tuesday, Derick Jones stopped Pastor Simpson in the hallway as he was walking toward Room 14.
" Pastor, I don't know what happened" he said as he showed Pastor Simpson the weekly ledger sheet. " Tithes were up 10% last weekend".
After the bible study was over, Pastor Simpson walked back to his office to sit down and relax. As he sat down at his desk, he looked at the drab and sparse surroundings of his office.
He stared at the lamp.

" Sure" Josh replied as he put some money on the table for their breakfast. " The service starts at 9:30, we'll save you a seat". He opened the front door.
" Josh, I don't feel any pain anymore in my arm or elbow".
He did not pay any attention to her comment.
Homer went back to his room and worshiped his golden calf statue for a while. After seeing the time, he put on a red polo shirt and then drove the short distance down the highway to Abundant Joy Lutheran Church.
Pastor Tony Winters slowly lit the four candles above the altar and then the two that were on tha altar. He put the candlelighter behind the pulpit and then glanced at his watch. It was 9:10 and his two regular ushers were not here yet. He checked to make sure that there were plenty of bulletins.
" Good morning Pastor Winters" Bill Rogers said as he put on his ushering nametag and began to hand out the bulletins. The other usher also came.
Pastor Winters had a look of relief on his face as the time came closer to 9:30.

the ghost

the ghost by ric gustafson

Peter and the other apostles were huddled in the boat as waves crashed against it in the dark. They were not sure why Jesus made them get into the boat ahead of him and meet him on the other side of the lake. They had just witnessed a miracle where several thousand people were fed with just five barley loaves and two fish. After dismissing the large crowd, He noticed the boat on the lake and then went off alone to pray.
Peter and the others could hardly see anything as they looked out at the dark and windswept lake. All of a sudden, they noticed something strange floating across the water.
" It's a ghost" the apostles cried out in fear.
" Take courage it is I, don't be afraid" Jesus said.
Peter thought for a moment. " Lord if it is you, tell me to come to you on the water".
" Come".
Peter stood up and then walked to the edge of the boat. He saw Jesus in the distance and courage came to him. He got out of the boat and started walking toward Jesus.
As he was walking, all of a sudden Peter looked down. He heard the wind howl and he became afraid. He began to sink. " Lord, save me".
Immediately, Jesus reached out his hand and caught Peter. " You of little faith" Jesus said to Peter. " Why did you doubt".
Jesus and Peter got back into the boat and the wind died down. All of the apostles worshiped Jesus. " Truly you are the Son of God".

" I'm sorry I cannot shake your hand very well" Clarice said as she rubbed her arm and elbow and winced. " My arm and elbow are extremely sore probably due to my tennis playing".
" I'm sorry to hear that" Homer replied as he touched Clarice's arm. Immediately, she felt warmth to her arm and elbow and they did not feel sore any longer.
" I hope you feel better".
Josh and Clarice sat back down and ordered breakfast. Flora brought them toast, scrambled eggs and juice.
" So where are you going after you eat?" Homer asked as Flora gave him his bill.
" Church" Josh said as he ate his toast. " We go to the only church in town".
" What church is that?" he asked as he gave Flora some money for his breakfast.
" Abundant Joy Lutheran Church". He took a bite of his scrambled eggs. " It's the only church in town".
" Would you mind if I came to a service?" Homer asked as he gave him a strange grin. " My travel plans have suddenly changed".

the return to the land of Dante page 4 by ric gustafson

The tanker stopped. Charon tied up the ropes to the landing and then unlocked the gate. " Time to get off you damned souls" he growled as he swung his lead pipe. He stared at Aaron and the elderly man. " Don't come back you two".
They walked in the dark for miles and then stopped at the edge of a large cliff.
Aaron shivered as he looked down toward complete darkness. " We are going to climb down there".
" Yes" the old man said as he slowly began to move backwards down the rocky surface. " Follow me".
Aaron followed closely as the two walked backwards down the face of the cliff. After a while, they stopped on a small ledge.
" I can't go any farther" Aaron said as he stared at the old man with tired eyes. " Go on without me".
" We are just about there".
Hours later, the two climbed down onto a stone wall.
" Where are we going?" asked Aaron as the old man got off the stone wall and began to walk down a dusty road.
" See those campfires in the distance" the old man replied as he pointed into the darkness.
" Yes".
" That is where we are going".

Flora poured a cup of coffee and put it in front of Stanley, who delivered the mail in Smokey Flats. Out of the corner of her eye she watched as the stranger walked in and sat down at a corner booth. She picked up a menu from the bin and walked over to his table.
" Good morning" she said as she handed him a greasy menu. " Can I get you something to drink?".
" Yes black coffee" Homer replied as he stared at her through his dark sunglasses. He opened up the menu as she went to get his drink. As he looked at the menu, he thought to himself that pancakes sounded good this morning. As he quickly looked around the small diner, he noticed that customers were pretty sparse this Sunday morning. Probably going to church he thought with an evil smirk.
" Here's your coffee" Flora said as she put the pot down next to his silverware. " Anything on the menu look good?".
" Yes, I'll have the pancake short stack" he replied as he put the menu down. " And keep the black coffee coming".
As Flora left to put the order in, Josh and Clarice walked in. They sat down at a table next to Homer's.
" Good morning Josh".
The young man turned with a surprised look on his face. " Hi Mr Tang" he replied as he pointed at the young woman next to him. " You remember my friend Clarice".
" Of course".

Homer drove the green Saturn into the parking space opposite room 12 and got his two black suitcases out of the trunk. He opened the door of room 12 and put the suitcases on the edge of the queen sized bed. The room was sparse except for the bed, a small dresser, an oversized easy chair and a TV. He opened up one of the two suitcases and took out what looked like a small golden calf statue. He put it on top of the dresser. For the next hour, he chanted and worshipped the little statue until he got tired. He got unto the bed and took a nap.
" Hi Dad" Josh said as he and Clarice Anderson walked into the lobby. He saw his father was dusting the front counter and the candy machine which sat in a corner of the lobby.
" Hi Josh" his father replied as he put the dust rag down. " Hello Clarice and how are you".
" Fine Mr Marcotte".
" Any customers tonight?" Josh asked as he filled a paper cup with ice from the ice machine.
" Just one".
" Hello".
Startled, Josh turned around to see a young man who was wearing a red polo shirt and dark sunglasses extending his hand.
" Homer Tang" he said with a strange grin. " Nice to meet you".
When Josh shook Homer's hand, a strange feeling came over him.
