world cars: Tucker Torpedo

world cars: Tucker Torpedo by ric gustafson

In 1948, Preston Tucker came up with an idea for a car that was ahead of it's time. His idea was for a rear engined car that had some safety features that nobody had ever heard of. A crushable passenger compartment and a pop out windscreen were two of these features. A low slung style and a independent suspension system put it years ahead of it's competition.
Tucker raised millions on the stock market to fund his dream. An aircraft factory in Chicago was leased to build his dream car. 300,000 people placed orders for the car but disaster happened. At the last minute, a different engine and transmission had to be installed.
Preston Tucker ran out of money and only 51 Torpedos were produced. Tucker was indicted for fraud and the car remains one of the greatest to nearly get made.

Alfred Misk opened the cold steel garage door. " Have a good day" he said to his wife Maureen as she put her lunch sack into the back seat of the Saturn Ion. He gave her a big hug. " Stay warm".
She started the car, smiled and backed out of the driveway.
As he watched her drive onto Roe Drive and then out of his sight, he noticed something in the driveway. He walked over and noticed it was a newspaper. ' That's strange' he thought as he looked around the block to see if anyone else had one in their driveway. He did not notice anyone else having one. " That's odd" he mumbled to himself as he picked it up and then closed the garage door.
He walked upstairs to the small kitchen and then put it on their pennisula. He poured himself a cup of coffee and then took off the plastic wrapping that it came in. He opened it to reveal no writing on any of the pages. It simply said in bold letters ' Happy Birthday  God Loves You'.

Ruth 1:9-' And they wept aloud'. Tears came as all three wept over lost husbands and sons.

In 1968, a full size fastback coupe was introduced. With rear pillars and a simple front, it was different than the cars of the 1950's. It had a V8 engine, three speed automatic transmission and could accelerate to 60 mph in 6 seconds. The R/T 1968 model was the first for the Charger who's line lasted from 1968 to 1978.

Ruth 1:8- ' May the Lord show kindness to you, as you have shown to your dead and to me'. Naomi is giving a blessing to her daughters in law. The translation of the blessing means faithful goodness and lovingkindness

Psalm reflections: Psalm 3

Psalm reflections: Psalm 3 by ric gustafson

Psalm 3:3 says you bestow glory on me and lift up my head. The word glory comes from a Hebrew word meaning ' weight' or ' significance'. David who wrote this passage found security and worth in God. Many stood against him and he could of felt discouraged or depressed. But instead he says that the Lord protects him like a shield and gives glory to him.
When storms or troubles come our way we can have peace in our hearts. God is our shield and defender so we can lie down and sleep in peace.

Charles was finishing up the executive meeting when the intercom rang. The investment firm he had founded  was doing great business  and at the moment was very prosperous. He glanced out the large window and witnessed the beautiful spring day. He and his wife Katie were looking forward to the return of their daughter Kelly from college. She was going to live with them but work during the summer.
" Mr Brown, Michelle wants to speak with you" Jack Westin whispered from the conference table.
Charles frowned as he picked up the phone. His secretary normally never called him during a meeting unless it was a emergency. " Yes Michelle".
" Mr Brown, I'm sorry for interrupting the meeting" her voice said as it cracked. " I have a family call you should probably take in your office".
" Gentlemen, I'm sorry to stop the meeting but I have an urgent call I need to take". Worried, he walked out of the conference room and walked down the carpeted hallway to his office. He closed the door and sat down at his large oak desk. The phone rang. He picked it up. " Hello, this is Charles Brown".
" Jessica, slow down and try to speak a little more clearly" he said quietly into the phone. " I cannot understand you".
As the caller talked on, Charles's face turned ashen.
He put his face onto the desk and began to cry. " Lord, help me".

In Psalm 2, wicked nations were plotting and gathering to overthrow God's annointed. God laughed and sits in heaven calm and unthreatened. God rebukes his enemies and terrifies them.
God warns his enemies to serve the Lord in fear and rejoice with trembling. God judges but he also shows great compassion. God says blessed are all who take refuge in him.

world cars: Alfa Romeo Spider ' Duetto'

world cars: Alfa Romeo Spider ' Duetto' by ric gustafson

In 1966 at the Turin Motor Show an Alfa Romeo car was introduced. The Spider Duetto had a rounded boat tail style. The last version of this vehicle was in 1993. The car was noted for it's hood mechanism that could be raised or lowered with one hand. The round tail style was changed to a square tail. It had a four cylinder twin cam engine and had a five speed transmission. Drivers enjoyed the crisp handling and the fastness of the car.
In the 60's film the Graduate, Dustin Hoffman drives a red Spider Duetto.

Star Wars: blasters

Star Wars: blasters by ric gustafson

No weapon has done more for the galaxy than the simple blaster. This weapon has come in all shapes and sizes with optic scopes, triggers and handgrips. Blasters are made up of two main components: a gas chamber and a power cell. The chamber is filled with an energy gas and when it fires, some of this gas comes through a conversion enabler. The power cell excites the gas and then it passes through an actuating module. Then it is converted into a beam and comes through the barrel as a bolt of glowing energy.
This weapon is easy to recharge and requires little maintenance. The first blasters were heavy pieces and slow to recharge. As time went on, blasters became smaller and more practical. This weapon eventually became a hand weapon.

Psalm 1:3- ' He is like a tree planted by streams of water which yields its fruit in season'

As God's children, we are like plants. We put down roots, come up through the earth, spread our branches and burst into blossom.  Psalm 1:2 says that And on his law he meditates day and night. We need to root ourselves all the time in God's Word. When we do this, we will be like a fruit tree that is planted by streams of water. Our branches will yield fruit in season and that pleases God.

Judas stood outside the hall. He looked around the corner and saw what was happening. He heard Caiaphas the chief priest condemn the man he had betrayed. Judas began to realize the enormity of what he had done. He had betrayed an innocent man and now he had just been condemned by the Sanhedrin. As he held onto the sack containing the thirty pieces of silver, he knew what he had to do.
After Flavius led Jesus out of the hall, Judas walked in and walked up to Caiaphas.
" I have sinned by betraying innocent blood".
" What is that to us". He pointed a finger at Judas. " You see to it".
Frustrated, Judas threw the sack containing the silver at the chief priest's feet and then stormed out.
Flavius later learned that he had gone and hanged himself.
Caiaphas picked up the sack. " It is not lawful to put this into the treasury because they are the price of blood".
The chief priest and the others decided to use the money to buy the potters field to bury strangers in.

Ruth 1:6 says ' When she heard in Moab that the Lord had come to the aid of his people by providing food for them'. Even with all the death around her, Naomi listened for the Lord's voice. God came and blessed his people with good crops again. God ended the famine and Naomi celebrated with her daughters in law.
Ruth 1:6 says ' Naomi and her daughters in law prepared to return home from there'.  Naomi was the expert in getting ready to move somewhere compared to her daughters in law. It doesn't say what they packed but Orpah and Ruth probably had never traveled past Moab's border. The three of them were leaving Moab and the graves of those they loved.
Ruth 1:7 says ' With her two daughters in law she left the place where she had been living and set out on the road that would take them back to the land of Judah'. Naomi was probably traveling the same route that she was a decade earlier. Then she had a husband and two sons and now only had one bundle to carry and two daughters in law behind her.

Peacemaker: a unique peace

Peacemaker: a unique peace by ric gustafson

God has made everyone unique, no one is the same as anyone else. God does not want us to compare ourselves to anyone else. Each of us is here for a purpose and not by accident. Satan wants us to compare ourselves to others and that can affect our peace. When we are having tough times, Satan will try to convince us that all is lost. God said that we will have troubles but promises peace and that we should not fear them.
God does not want us to dwell on our problems and negative things but to be positive that God will take care of the situation. Joy will come when we focus on Jesus and not ourselves. We will have peace when we realize that we are unique in Christ.

Flavius was sitting outside the small dungeon cell and closed his eyes briefly to rest. The cell was down in the basement of his boss's house. He looked over and saw that his prisoner was sitting in a corner of the cell with his eyes closed as if he was praying. As Flavius closed his eyes again, he thought to himself the admiration he was beginning to feel for the prisoner. After the healing of Caiaphas's servant's ear and keeping silent even through severe physical and emotional abuse,  Flavius was beginning to see the prisoner in a different light.
After a few hours of sleep, Flavius was awakened by one of Caiaphas's servants. He was told that the Sanhedrin had reconvened upstairs and was waiting for the prisoner. He bounded Jesus's hands but did not tighten them as much as he could of. He led Jesus upstairs to the hall where he was the night before. He stood Jesus in front of his accusers.
One of the members stood up. " Are you the Christ?".
Jesus stared at his accusers. " If I tell you you will not believe and if I ask you you will not answer or let me go". He looked at the one who accused him. " The Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God".
Another member stood up. " Are you then the Son of God?".
Jesus looked at his accuser. " You rightly say that I am".
Several members stood up and pointed fingers at Jesus. " What more testimony do we need?".
Caiaphas stood up. " This trial is closed".
He pointed to Flavius. " Take this prisoner to the Govenor Pontius Pilate".

the embrace: embracing faith

the embrace: embracing faith by ric gustafson

II Corinthians 5:7- ' We live by faith not by sight'

Faith is an act of God which draws us to him. He wants us to take one brave step and to trust in him. Faith is a risk and something that we step into. Hebrews 11:1 says Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Faith is God made and is a miracle born of love. God loves us without limitations. Sometimes fear chokes our faith but God says do not be afraid or discouraged. Even though we cannot see God, we know he is there and love him.
That is true faith.

Jessica glanced at her watch and noticed it said 8:00. ' Just enough time for a quick jog' she thought as she opened the door. She looked forward to seeing her parents.

June 15  1921

Marie Danova carried her small worn felt bag as she walked along the dock. She weaved her way through the crowd as her eyes took in the busyness of the launch. She was lucky to be hired on the S.S. Paris on it's crossing from Le Havre to New York. As she walked  toward the steerage gangplank, she noticed bakers with their baskets, florists with their wares and Paris ladies wearing dresses of silk.
She had received her assignment on the Paris a month ago and was anxious to start her new assignment and a new chapter in her life. She watched as youngsters were balancing themselves on the mooring lines and looking up at the three huge funnels on the huge liner.
All of a sudden, she bumped into someone and fell on the edge of the gangplank.
" I'm sorry" Devon Misa said as he helped the young woman up to her feet. " I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing".
" That's ok" she quietly replied as she rubbed her now sore left knee. Blushing, she hobbled up the gangplank and into the ship. She walked to the third class deck and looked over the railing. As she rubbed her knee, she watched the young man enter the first class entrance.

Vinnie Deegan opened his eyes as he heard the doorbell. He had fallen asleep as he was watching the football game.
" Get down Rodger Dodger" he said to the white cat who was resting on his lap. The cat jumped off and he got up and put on his black slippers. He walked over and barely opened the door. " Yes".
" I saw your ad in the van section" said a short pudgy man who wore glasses. " The ad was about a white van for sale".
" Oh yes" he replied as he pointed toward the closed garage. " I will come out and show it to you".
Vinnie put on his tennis shoes and his brown summer coat. He opened the door and then walked to the garage door. He took a key from his key ring and opened the garage. It revealed a small white van with no markings.
" It's not a very large van as you can see" Vinnie said as they walked around it and studied it. " Why do you need it for?".
" I'm going to use it for a delivery service that I'm going to start" he said with a grin as he took a wallet out of his back pant pocket. " I'll take the van and I would like to pay cash for it".
After the sale was finalized, they walked toward the end of the garage. The stranger glanced toward a corner of the cluttered garage. " Are you going to use that pile of rope?".

the embrace: embracing doubt

the embrace: embracing doubt by ric gustafson

Jude 1: 22- ' Be merciful to those who doubt'

Trust is hard for people and old fears never truly leave us. Old fears keep us from reaching, trusting and keeps the light of truth dim in our lives. But God never leaves us and is always looking for us. Before God created the world, he was thinking of us.
Some of us start our spiritual journeys with doubt but God loves us and we are made in his image. Even though we doubt and are afraid, God wants us to call upon his name. God's faithfulness removes our doubt and fears. God does not love us because we are good but because we are his.

Star Wars: lightsabers

Star Wars: lightsabers by ric gustafson

Lightsabers is the traditional weapon of the Jedi. It is a deadly weapon using a Jedi's meditation and sense of the Force. The components of a lightsaber are simple. It consists basically of simple power cells, controls, conductors and a reflector cup.
Energy from a power cell in the hilt gives the lightsaber it's energy. The energy is fed into a chamber and the crystals move it along the hilt. This produces a blade shaped energy field that is a about a meter in length.
The first Jedi weapons were swords that were sharpened by the Force. These weapons had Force blades that contained crystals in their blades.
The earliest lightsabers used frozen blaster technology and were used as siege weapons. Over time, the power packs grew smaller and eventually contained in the modern lightsaber.

This is what Caiaphas had been waiting for.
Another witness spoke up. " I also heard him say I will destroy this Temple made with hands and in three days I will build another made without hands".
Caiaphas noticed that Jesus was still silent and had his head down.
" Do you not answer?" he asked as she looked at the so called king. " What is this these men testify against you?".
Jesus lifted his head but did not say a word.
" Under oath, tell us if you are the Christ the Son of God".
" I am".
The assembled could not believe what they just heard.
" It is as you said and you will see the Son of God sitting at the right hand of God and coming in the clouds of heaven".
After hearing this, Caiaphas tore his clothes and yelled toward the seventy men seated behind him. " You've heard the blasphemy" he said with an angry face. " What do you think?".
Everyone said in unison " he deserves death".
Some walked up, spit on Jesus and hit him. Others blindfolded him. Others struck him and then asked him who just struck you.
Through all of the abuse, Jesus did not retaliate.

Kelly held tightly unto her father's hand as they slowly walked through the green summer grass.
" There's the stand with the cool dessert I like" she said with a squeal.
" Oh yes the funnel cakes" Charles Brown replied with a big smile as he adjusted his baseball cap. " Later on, I think we can have one".
" Yea" she exclaimed as she clapped her small hands in joy. " I love the powdered sugar that's on top".
Charles was happy that he had brought his daughter for an afternoon of fun to the county fair. He did not spend as much time with her as he wished. His job as CEO of an investment firm kept him for long hours away from his family. After three hours of riding the Black Spider, playing skee ball and every carnival game you could imagine, Charles's fair tickets were just about gone.
" Before we get a funnel cake" he said to his seven year old daughter. " I have enough tickets for one more ride".
" The bumper cars Daddy" she screamed with joy as she ran toward the tent next door.
They quickly got into line. Kelly got into a car up front and Charles got into a car toward the back.
A ride worker walked over and said something to Charles. He got out of his car and walked over to the entrance.
The ride started and as cars banged into each other, Kelly could not see her father. " Daddy, where are you?" she yelled as cars banged into hers. When the ride stopped, a crying Kelly saw her father at the entrance. She ran into his open arms. " Daddy, where were you?".
" Sweetheart, I could not ride the car so I was standing here watching you the whole time".
" Daddy, promise me you will never leave me".
" I promise" Charles said as he tightly embraced his daughter.

Flavius held tightly onto the rope as he led Jesus across the open courtyard toward Caiaphas's house. As he and his small contingent of soldiers led the Rabbi across the dark courtyard, he noticed the coal fire that was in a corner. His keen eye noticed two men standing near it who stood out. One was big, burly and looked like a fisherman. He looked familiar to Flavius but he couldn't remember where he saw him.
He led Jesus into the large meeting hall.
Caiaphas noticed the Rabbi and raised his hand to quiet the seventy men behind him. Instead of a so called King, he looked upon a young bearded man in a tattered cloak. The young man's face looked swollen from being struck there already.
Flavius led Jesus up to Caiaphas and now he stood in front of him. His head was down and he was silent. Several people came forward and said all kinds of accusations against the prisoner. Caiaphas knew that their statements would not sustain a charge against the prisoner. When the last two witnesses spoke up, the chief priest knew he had finally heard what he had been waiting for.

Annas was resting on some big cushions when a servant came in. " Sire, I just heard that someone very important is coming".
Annas began to munch on a grape. " Who is that?".
" Remember that Rabbi from Galilee who caused all that trouble in the Temple that day".
Annas winced because he knew who the servant was talking about. A lot of his wealth came from license fees that he charged the moneychangers who ran the animal trade on the Temple grounds. He was upset because this Rabbi made a whip and turned over the moneychangers tables. He lost a lot of money that day. Even though he was the former chief priest, he still held great power.
Flavius led Jesus by a rope into the torch lit room. Annas could not believe what he was looking at. In front of him stood a young bearded man in tattered clothes and who's face looked like it had been roughed up by soldiers.
" Tell me about your disciples and your doctrine?".
" I spoke openly to the world, why do you ask me ask those who have heard me".
One of the soldiers next to Jesus struck him with the palm of his hand. " Do you answer the high priest like that?".
Jesus turned toward the soldier. " If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil but if well, why do you strike me?".
After a while of trying to get some answers from Jesus, Annas motioned for Flavius. " Take him through the courtyard to Caiaphas's house".

" Need some help" a young man inquired as he walked toward the mall entrance with his wife.
" Sure". " I'm trying to get this Impala out of this snow bank".
" I'll push from this door, if you will push from the hood". The young man opened the driver door and got himself ready. With the two pushing, it only took a few minutes to get the car out of the snow bank.
" Thank you" Sean said with a grin as he shook the young man's hand.
" Your welcome". He and his wife walked toward the mall entrance. " Happy holidays".
Sean walked back inside the mall entrance and saw the young mother and her small daughter huddled along a side wall. He unzipped his black testing bag and took out some of the white strips. " Here are some test strips for you to get by for now".
" Thank you" she exclaimed as tears came down her face. " Nobody else would help us". He took some bills out of one of his pant pockets. " Here is some money so you can buy something in the food court".
She hugged Sean. " Thank you".
He walked downstairs and quietly got back into the line to see Santa. When it got to be his turn, he got onto Santa's knee. " I don't want a bowling ball for Christmas after all" he said as he shed a tear. " I've already received my Christmas wish".

Flavius Artemis- the centurion page 8 by ric gustafson

Maeiminus noticed a lad next to Flavius. " Flavius, who is that?".
" This is Malchus" he replied as he patted the young lad's shoulder. " He is a servant of Caiaphas's and he asked that I bring him along".
The mob quietly walked through the entrance of a grove of olive trees. Flavius noticed some men milling around as if they had just woken up from a nap. In the dark coming toward them was a tall young man who wore a dark beard. Judas smiled, walked forward toward Jesus and kissed him quickly on the cheek.
Jesus stared at Judas. " Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss". Jesus turned toward the mob. " Whom do you seek?".
The mob roared back " Jesus of Nazareth".
" I am he".
The mob stepped back and fell to the ground.
" Whom do you seek?".
The mob yelled again " Jesus of Nazareth".
" If it is I you are seeking" Jesus said as he pointed at his followers. " Then let these others go their way".
A big man, who looked like a fisherman, stood next to Jesus. All of a sudden, he pulled out a sword and struck the ear of Caiaphas's servant.
Malchus fell to the ground. He held onto his cut ear and screamed in pain.
Jesus gave Peter a stern look. " Put that sword away, shall I not drink the cup given by my Father". He knelt down and put his hand over Malchus's ear.
As Flavius watched in disbelief, Jesus healed the servant's ear. Jesus stood up and Flavius shook his head in confusion over the miracle he had just witnessed. Just then, he remembered what he and the mob were doing there. " Seize him" he said loudly. Some soldiers walked over and bound him with tight ropes.
While Malchus was still on the ground holding his now healed ear, Flavius and the others led Jesus away.

Sean got off of Santa's knee and then walked up the escalator toward the food court entrance. As he put his gloves and stocking cap on, he could sense it was very cold outside. He opened the cold glass door and then watched as a young woman wearing a thin summer coat and holding the hand of a small little girl ran inside.
" Please help us" she screamed as both her and the small child were shivering from the cold. " My daughter and I have no money, I'm diabetic and my sugar is really low and our car is stuck in a snow bank outside". She looked at Sean. " Somebody please help us".
As Sean walked through the cold biting snow to get his shovel out of the trunk of his car. He began to wonder why he was doing this for them. ' I could be warm inside the mall than out here freezing to death' he thought as he got the shovel and started walking toward the middle of the large parking lot. He found the rust covered Impala with it's front end stuck deep in a large snow bank. He shoveled some of the snow from the front tires, started the car but was unable to get it out of the snow bank.
" Need some help".

There were only two kids in front of Sean and now he was able to get a close look at Santa. He was larger than he had remembered but the red suit, white beard and the Ho Ho Ho's were the same. After the two kids ahead of him had left, Santa was now staring at Sean. He pointed at him and then Sean walked up and stood in front of him.
He motioned for Sean to get on his knee. " You're a little older than the children I normally get".
Sean slightly got on his right knee.
" Ho Ho Ho" replied Santa as he winced. " So what would you like for Christmas?".
" All I want for Christmas is a bowling ball".
" A what!".
" A high performance bowling ball that works good on all lane conditions".
" Oh". Santa chuckled.
" A Columbia 300 Freeze or Brunswick T-Zone would be nice".
" I'll see what I can do".
As Sean started to get off of Santa's knee, he remembered something. " Now that I am diabetic, I also wish for some diabetic test strips".
" Diabetic test strips?".
" They are very expensive".
Santa smiled at Sean. " I'll see what I can do".

a walk with Ruth page 3 by ric gustafson

Ruth 1:3 says now Elimelech, Naomi's husband died and she was left with her two sons. We have not heard anything about the family's time in Moab or how long they were there. Now we see that Naomi's husband died. We are not sure what happened to him wether it was disease, old age we are not sure. This passage just states that Elimelech died and that was it. It was a surprise to Naomi but not to God. God knows when our first and last days are on this earth. In an instant, Naomi became the head of the household. And now she had to take care of her two sons alone.

Peacemaker: accepting peace

Peacemaker: accepting peace by ric gustafson

A goal that we need as christians is to have confidence in who we are in Christ. Because we are a child of God, we can pray boldly in faith and know that God hears our prayers. We develop godly character and can be used by God to lead others to Christ. In order to be at peace with ourselves, we need to enjoy our life.
Matthew 5:48 says to be perfect therefore as your heavenly Father is perfect. The apostle Paul stressed that we need to press toward the goal. That goal is to leave mistakes behind and strive toward the goal of being perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect.
When we are born again, we receive a new identity and make us his children. In order to have peace with ourselves, God makes us perfect and righteous in Christ. This peace is not based on our own works and behavior. In order to make spiritual progress, we need to keep our eyes on Jesus.

Ruth 1:1 says ' In the days when the judges ruled'. This story takes place between 1220 and 1050 BC. The people of Israel were rebelling in their evil practices and their stubborn ways. Ruth 1:1 says that there was a famine in the land. Israel was being ravaged by a huge famine and the people were starving. Ruth 1:1 says that a man from Bethlehem in Judah together with his wife and two sons. The book does not say who these people are but it was one husband, one wife and two sons. Ruth 1:1 says they went to live for a while in the country of Moab. This family left Bethlehem and traveled to the land of Moab. This area was only twenty five miles across and only up to sixty miles from north to south. Only several  dozen small settlements made up the plains of Moab.

Peacemaker: rushing peace

Peacemaker: rushing peace by ric gustafson

A lot of people in this world are always in a hurry. To enjoy peace, we need to slow down. Both God and Jesus are never in a hurry. Ecclesiastes 3:1 says to everything there is a season. Rushing starts in the mind. When our mind says to hurry up, we need to resist those suggestions. We need to live with margin in our lives to be happy. Philippians 4:13 says that I can do all things through Christ. We can do what we are called to do but not everything that we would like to do. We need to make a schedule but choose carefully what we will be involved in.

Peacemaker: maintaining peace

Peacemaker: maintaining peace by ric gustafson

Satan works very hard to steal our peace so we must be aware of his many tactics. When we lose our peace, it opens the door for Satan to come in. One way that we can maintain peace is to avoid strife in our lives. When we have strife in our lives, we cannot enjoy life or prosper. Along with strife, pride can take away our peace. Not only can we be peacemakers but also peace maintainers. We need to treat people nicely even if they are not nice to us.
Strife can also cause us stress which can lead to sickness and disease. We are children of God but to be a son or daughter of God involves a level of maturity.

bible promises: acceptqnce

bible promises: acceptance by ric gustafson

In the New Living Translation Psalm 27:10  says that even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord will hold me close. That is a promise that God makes to us. Paul writes in Romans 5:1-2 that we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Another promise from God in Romans the eight chapter verse 39 says that nothing in all creation will ever be able to seperate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. When we are having trouble accepting life's circumstances, Isaiah 26:3 says that if you will keep perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you.

First Century kitchen page 2

First Century kitchen page 2 by ric gustafson

Vegetables in the first century were eaten raw, dipped in salted water or olive oil, boiled and used in stews and soups. Onions, leeks and garlic were popular throughout the Roman Empire. Lettuce was used as a bitter herb.
Some of the vegetables in the first century included cucumbers, garlic, grape leaves, fig leaves, leeks, mallow, mushrooms, onions, radishes, shallots and turnips.
Some of the vegetables not known if they were available to the Middle Eastern cook include articokes, asparagus, beets, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, fennel and parsnips.
Nuts played a role in a first century diet. They were added to both sweet and savory foods. Nuts ground up were used in dips and sauces. Nuts provide a good source of protein.

A first century diet had grains and legumes as two main components. Grains were nutritious and could be stored for a long period of time. Farmers in Galilee had fields of barley, wheat and other grains. Grains were important for making bread which was eaten at every meal. First century cooks used wheat or barley as thickening agents compared to flour and water today.
Legumes were used in a variety of ways. Chickpeas, fava beans and lentils were the most common. The dried beans were soaked and then boiled in water. Sometimes garlic, onions or leeks were added. These beans were used to make soups, stews and sometimes ground for fried cakes or used for bread. Salt and crushed pepper enhanced the flavor of both legumes and grains.

all I want for Christmas is a bowling ball and some diabetic test strips page 1 by ric gustafson

Sean Bartlett walked from the restroom where he had to test himself and walked into the center of the mall. He felt very dejected and depressed. As he walked by the Starbuck's, he noticed huge decorated Christmas trees and bright lights.
' Who cares about Christmas' he thought to himself as giggling children ran past him. ' I can't believe I let my team down in that last game' he thought to himself as he walked toward the Rocky Mountain Candy Store for some sugar free chocolate. He noticed that Santa and some of his elves had arrived to bring good cheer to kids. A line for Santa began to form.
He walked into the candy store and came out with some sugar free chocolate. He took a bite of some sugar free toffee when a frown came to his face. ' After all these years, I still bowl terrible' he thought as he watched people going into the stores to shop." It's just a stupid game" he muttered to himself as he walked toward Starbuck's. ' If I just had the right bowling bowl' he thought as he wondered if the cookie store in the food court had sugar free cookies. He watched as children were getting on Santa's knee and telling him what they wanted for Christmas.
He stopped because an idea was forming in his head. He quietly walked to the end of the line of kids waiting for Santa. ' I'll ask Santa for a new high performance bowling ball and then I'll feel better about myself and Christmas' he thought to himself as the line began to move.

Moses page 6

Moses page 6 by ric gustafson

As Miriam led Moses through the Hebrew camp, he noticed many children playing but few boys. She stopped in front of a reed hut. They stepped inside to find a candle lit room and three people staring at him.
" Moses, this is your mother Jochebed". He stared at a mostly toothless skinny woman. " Moses, this is your father Amram and your brother Aaron".
His brother walked over and gave him a hug. It was not returned.
" I don't know any of you" Moses said as he looked at Aaron. " Tell me about your family".
" Our family came here long ago to escape a famine" Aaron exclaimed. " Pharaoh enslaved us".
" How many Gods do you serve?".
Amram sat down on the dirt floor. " Moses, we only serve the one true God".
" The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob".
" Yes".
" Please teach me about the Hebrew people".

In 2006, the new Ford Edge was to be introduced to the public. One immediate problem was a grinding noise coming from the suspension. Because of the problem, the introduction was halted.
In October of 2006, Mulally met with GM CEO Rick Wagoner. Wagoner had turned GM around in six years and was now making a profit. Some of Mulally's plans for Ford included reducing production to 3.6 million units by the end of 2008. Plant closures and job cuts would save the company five billion dollars. Mulally's strategy was for Ford's organization structure to be similiar to that of Boeing when he was there.
Mulally studied the company's brands. He looked at Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo and Mazda. By the end of 2006, Mulally was able to convince the board of directors to sell Jaguar and Land Rover and possibly Volvo. Mulally also wanted to negotiate a new contract with the UAW and concentrate more on European and Asian sales.
In November 2006, Ford's chief financial officer Don Leclair and Treasurer Ann Marie Petach made a pitch to the nation's largest investment banks.

Moses stopped in front of the Temple and stared at the two massive carvings that were over the entrance. One of the carved figures was of a lion's body and the other was a ram's head. Two scribes sat at the entrance and if anybody had a question, they wrote it down and took it inside. The only reason he came was because of the insistence of his mother. He shook his head and wondered why the Egyptians had to worship so many statues and carved figures.
He was about to pray when he noticed the same Hebrew slave woman staring at him from across the courtyard. With anger in his eyes, he quickly walked over to her. " Why do you always stare at me?". His height towered over her.
She stared back at him. " You are my brother".
" That's impossible".
" I was the one who put you into that basket in the Nile" she replied quietly. " Miriam is my name".
At first doubt crossed Moses's face that she was not telling the truth. He kept studying her face and then realized she was telling the truth. " I want to see my family".

Moses sat at the edge of the river and his eyes darted around. He wanted to make sure no crocodiles were around. He watched the slaves as they slowly pulled the dead hippo from the water. They stripped the meat off of it's bones, built a fire and then cooked it. To Moses, it seemed that they had not had meat in a long time.
As he sat and watched the slaves eat, he wondered about his Hebrew origin. He did not think of them as his people because he was raised in an Egyptian home. He did watch them toil in the hot sun and he felt compassion for them. As he walked away from the bank, he noticed a slave woman who was staring at him from the opposite side of the river.
Aaron smiled as he and his parents ate the greasy food. " Thank you Miriam for bringing the meat".
" I saw Moses".
" You did" Amram replied as he bit into a flour cake. " Where?".
" On the side of the bank as they were killing the hippo".
Jochebed quietly ate some of the meat. " Did he recognize you?".
" I think so" was her reply. " He left right away".
" Would you like to speak to him?" Amram asked as Jochebed took the now empty dishes away.
" I think so" she said with a sigh. " I'm not sure what I would ask him".
" The elders are going to be having a meeting" Amram said as he stood up from the mat. " I will talk to them about Moses".

" Moses, you're home" Kali said with glee as the servants finished putting a fancy dinner on the table. " I've missed you so".
Moses put his big arms around the tiny woman. " I've missed you too Mother". " Do you want to hear about the battles I've been in".
" No Son" she exclaimed as she stabbed at the little bit of food that was on her plate. " But there is something that is bothering me".
" What is that?".
" Son, why do you not observe ceremonial laws?".
Moses stared at his mother. " Mother, we have discussed this several times".
" Son, I am worried about your safety" she quietly said as her tiny hands clasped his big hands. " Mostly because of Jafari".
Moses nodded because he knew the High Priest of Egypt was angry with him. He had spoken up about his views on different Egyptian Gods including Osiris and Horias.
" My Son, he has hated you for a long time".
" I will be ok". He stood up from the table and gave his mother a peck on the cheek.

Miriam stood by the side of the road as the soldiers marched by. Their spears glistened in the sun as line after line of new slaves shuffled quietly behind them. She watched the chariot approach as a cry of " Moses" rang out. She stared at the one who was standing next to the driver. He was tall and handsome in his general's uniform. He saw her and gave a slight smile.
" He did not smile at me" Aaron retorted as he and their father Amram walked up to her.
They walked back to their hut.
Their mother, Jochebed had made them a meal. " So my daughter I hear that your brother smiled at you".
" Mother, I think he recognized me".

Miriam walked through the muddy reeds as she tightly held onto the wicker basket. She made her way through the reeds to the spot where the mighty river started. The river was up to her chest and she opened the basket to make sure her baby brother was ok. The baby had dark eyes, black hair and a smooth complexion.
" I'm sorry baby brother" she said as she pushed the basket out into the current. She silently watched as the small basket began to float downstream.
Princess Kali and some of her handmaids were in the water near the reeds. One of the handmaids screamed ' something is in the water!". She waded out and brought back a small wicker basket. She presented it to the Princess.
She opened the basket to reveal a Hebrew baby.
" It is not an Egyptian boy your Highness".
" I know". She smiled as the little baby's finger wrapped around hers. " The Nile has given me this child".
" What will you call him Princess?".
Princess Kali looked at the dark haired baby.
" Because he was taken from the water" she said as she grinned at the handmaids. " I will call him Moses".

Psalm 18:30- ' He is a buckler to all those that trust in him'

This term refers to God the Father. A buckler was a small shield that was made of leather with brass or iron decorations. In this passage, King David is referring to God as the buckler. Soldiers had large shields to hide behind to avoid arrows or spears. In hand to hand combat, a buckler could deflect a sword and do a blow to the enemy. When storms in life get really tough, we need someone to stand between us and our enemy. God as the Buckler will be before us protecting us from the enemy.

Matthew 16:16- ' Thou art the Christ the Son of the living God'

This term refers to God the Son. Christ is the Greek translation of Messiah or Anointed One. The Apostle Peter made this profound statement of faith. In the verses before this passage, Jesus is asking his disciples whom do men say that I the Son of Man is. They replied John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah or another prophet. Then Jesus asked them but who do you say that I am. Peter replied ' you are the Christ, the Son of the living God'.
As followers of Jesus, we need to be bold like Peter and say to everyone ' Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God'.

The name of Jesus is an Old English translation of a Greek translation of a Hebrew name. The prophet Isaiah predicted that the Messiah's name would be Immanuel. Immanuel means God with us.
We who are followers of Jesus call him Savior and love him.

the Sheep and the Goats page 2

the Sheep and the Goats page 2 by ric gustafson

Louie kneeled but noticed that some people to Jesus's left were standing and not kneeling. The archangel raised an outstretched arm to quiet the masses. " The time has come to avenge the blood of the martyrs".
Jesus cried out in a loud voice ' the time has come to reward my faithful servants and to punish those who have harmed them".
Those on Jesus's left began to shout ' Jesus is the Christ, Jesus is the Christ".
Jesus stood up and walked to the left edge of the platform. With anger and sadness in his voice, he pointed toward those on his left. " Depart from me you cursed into the everlasting fire I have prepared for the devil and his angels".
The masses on the left yelled back " No Lord No".
" I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was naked and you did not clothe me, I was in prison and you did not visit me".
The masses on the left yelled again " when did all these things happen?".
" When you did not do it to the least of these" he said as he pointed to those on his right. " You did not do it to me".
The masses on the left yelled again " we love you Lord, we do love you".
Jesus sat down in his altar chair. " My Father has given me authority to execute judgement and my judgement is righteousness".
The masses on the left got down on their knees and pleaded " No! Lord No!".
Jesus, with tears in his eyes, raised one finger and a chasm to the left of the platform opened wide. Everyone to the left of the platform fell in cursing and yelling. Just as quickly, the ground closed and returned to normal.

names of God: Advocate

names of God: Advocate by ric gustafson

I John 2:1- ' And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous'

This term refers to God the Son. An advocate is one who speaks in support of another such as a court of law. In this passage, John is reminding us that to believe in Christ means that we must follow his example. When we try and fail, Jesus will speak on our behalf at the final judgment. When we answer for our lives before God, human nature will show that we fall short of God's expectations. How could God the Judge understand?. Jesus Christ our Advocate will intercede for us his followers.

Disciple: a disciple imitates

Disciple: a disciple imitates by ric gustafson

Jesus taught by example that a disciple needs to imitate. Jesus's disciples could not imitate Jesus on their own. They needed the Spirit's outpouring at Pentacost. Later by God's grace, they were able to pass Jesus's examples to others. Like Jesus's disciples we stumble, falter and fall. We need to totally depend on God's grace. Then we can imitate Jesus in our words and actions and encourage others to do the same.

Disciple: a disciple depends

Disciple: a disciple depends by ric gustafson

John chapter 15 says that Jesus talked about the vine and branches. Branches by themselves cannot survive but branches dependent on the vine survive and flourish. Jesus depended totally on his heavenly Father. Luke 22:42 says that Jesus prayed ' not my will but your will be done".
In order to depend on Jesus, we need to confess our failures to him. Jesus will draw us to him with love and forgiveness. Christ is the Vine and we are the Branches. When we are attached to Jesus the Vine his love flows through us and we depend on Jesus for everything.
As a disciple of Jesus, we need to totally depend on him.

names of God: Manna

names of God: Manna by ric gustafson

Exodus 16:31- ' And the house of Israel called the name thereof Manna'

This term refers to God the Father. The original meaning of the term Manna is not known. The Israelites were starving in the desert. God sent them a special bread that appeared like dew every morning and evaporated in the sun. It usually did not last longer than a day unless it was prepared for the Sabbath. Some people took it for granted but there was always enough to feed the people.
God is not only food for our stomachs but more important it is food for our souls.

Two years later

Tiffany walked up to the dairy case. She opened it and then smiled. Inside were racks and racks of one percent milk.
" Hello Tiffany". She turned to see the young clerk from two years before putting packages of yogurt into a dairy case.
" Hi". She hesitated. " I've been studying God's Word everyday for two years now".
" That's good" he replied with a smile. " You are now ready for solid food".
" Solid food?".
" Paul in Hebrews 5 says that solid food is for the mature".
" The mature?".
" Those who can distinguish good from evil".

Tiffany Miller held onto the black plastic basket as she walked up to the long glass dairy case. She was frustrated because she had to leave home quickly this morning to get her weekly groceries. She wanted to study God's Word but did not have time.
She walked up to the milk case and opened the door. She stared in disbelief as she noticed that there was no milk on the rack. The rack was totally empty. She noticed a young clerk coming out of the back door.
" Excuse me, where is the milk?".
He smiled at Tiffany. " Aren't you an infant in Christ?".
" Yes, I gave my life to Christ two weeks ago".
He handed her a small black bible. " All you can handle right now is spiritual milk".
She grinned as she took the bible. " I crave pure spiritual milk".
The young clerk smiled at Tiffany. " Drink from God's Holy Word".
" I will".
" Come back when you are ready for solid food".
