Irena walked through the new Jewish ghetto. It was full of people loaded down with luggage. She had never seen so many people in one place. She watched the Aryan Polish traffic at the southern gate. By the time she neared the northern gate, she had a good idea of what she needed to do.
The next morning, she noticed workers building a wall around the ghetto. It was to be sealed.
In January of 1941, Irena was still taking care of her mother. She decided to come up with a way she could stay in the ghetto. It had been several months since her last food supplies to the hungry Jewish families. One day, she decided to threaten her boss to get into the ghetto. It worked and she got a new job of inspector for communicable diseases. She was thrilled. She could stay in the ghetto.
