Buddy Ebsen was tall at 6 foot three. In April 1938, MGM wanted him to play the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz. He was in a two year contract at a salary of $ 1,500 a week. He came to MGM in December 1934. Later, he played Jed Clampett in the Beverly Hillbillies. At the age of sixty six, he played a private investigator as Barnaby Jones. In the end, Ray Bolger became the Scarecrow and Ebsen was to play the Tin Woodman. Two weeks into the production, because of health problems related to the Tin Woodman costume, he was replaced by Jack Haley. Ebsen's career slumped after that until 1956.
