crimes of the century: Martin Luther King Jr by ric gustafson

There was a man whose powerful orations and dreams of ending racism rallied the nation. His name was Martin Luther King Jr. During a speech in Memphis, he appeared to foretell his own demise. " I've seen the promised land" he said at the Mason Temple Church April 3 1968. The next day on April 4 at 6:01 pm, a sniper's bullet struck King in the neck as he stood on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel.
King was rushed to a hospital but damage to his heart could not be repaired. A hunt for his killer started. A man was seen fleeing the area after the shooting. A two bit criminal named James Earl Ray was spotted at the scene and his fingerprints were on a rifle that was seized.
On March 10, 1969 Ray confessed to the crime and was sentenced to 99 years in prison. On April 23, 1998, Ray died in prison at age 70 from liver failure.
