crimes of the century: Fatty Arbuckle

crimes of the century: Fatty Arbuckle by ric gustafson

Roscoe ' Fatty' Arbuckle was a silent film comedian  and was one of Hollywood's biggest stars. He was adored by millions and was the first movie star to earn $ 1 million a year.
On September 5 1921, he threw a huge bash in San Francisco and invited a party girl by the name of Virginia Rappe. After the party she fell ill and it was determined that she was suffering from alcohol poisoning. She died four days later and a friend of hers accused Arbuckle of raping her and crushing her bladder.
Arbuckle went through two trials in which both ended with a hung jury. He was acquitted in April 1922 but the damage was already done to his career. On June 28 1933, he signed a new contract with Warner Brothers. It was short lived as he died that night at age 46 from a heart attack.
He died penniless.
