Judy Garland entered the MGM system on September 27 1935. This was three months after her 13th birthday. She was signed to a seven year contract with seven options. By the fall of 1937, her salary was $400 a week. By September 1939, she was making $600 a week. By August 1940, she was earning $2000 a week.
She made six pictures before the Wizard of Oz including Broadway Melody of 1938 and Everybody Sing. She made eight pictures with Mickey Rooney. On February 24 1938, it was reported that Garland was to be cast as Dorothy. At this point, she had been at MGM for two and a half years. Shirley Temple was MGM's first choice for Dorothy but Darryl Zanuck of 20th Century Fox would not loan her out. Judy Garland was cast as Dorothy.
