Operation Overlord page 8 by ric gustafson
Army Ranger James Rudder was not happy. It was 0710 and he did not have the troops or supplies for the mission he was assigned. He and his men were ordered to take an isolated gun position on top of a 100 foot cliff. The gun position was called Pointe du Hoc. Their job was to silence six 155 artillery pieces
As Rudder and his Rangers came onshore, they were met by heavy machine gun and sniper fire. Two US destroyers began bombing the top of the cliff. After only 5 minutes, the first Rangers reached the top of the cliff. For two days, Rudder and his Rangers held off the German counterattacks. When they were relieved on June 8, they were down to 90 out of 225 men.
