God's Word: Wisdom and Law by ric gustafson
We read God's Word for guidance on how to live. Books on wisdom include Proverbs, Job and Ecclesiastes. These books contain short sayings or aphorisms which give advice on how to behave. The book of Proverbs contain several small collections of sayings that originated at different times. The books of Job and Ecclesiastes are more theological than Proverbs. These books ask more direct questions about the nature and character of God. Job consists of three cycles of dialogue between Job and his three friends. The book of Ecclesiastes talks about the meaning of life and that all is vanity. These two books quote proverbs that there is order and worth on earth. Proverbs may of been written by court scribes. Job and Ecclesiastes may have been written by individual writers.
The Book of the Covenant was a collection of law in the Hebrew Bible. This is in Exodus 21-23. This could be the oldest of the biblical law codes. The second collection of law is in Deuteronomy 12-26. The third set of law is in Leviticus 19-26. This is known as the Holiness Code.
