Free in Jesus: Free to be brave

Free in Jesus: Free to be brave by ric gustafson

God wants us to be brave. He wants us to step out of our comfort zone. He wants us to be brave for him into uncharted waters. Fear from Satan holds us back. We must decide will we be brave enough to follow God's call?. Or will we be fearful and say no.
We ask ourselves will we fail?. God tells us that we will not fail. God is always with us and loves us more than anything else in this world. Praise God.

God's Word: Prophecy

God's Word: Prophecy by ric gustafson

In the New Testament, Jesus is the fulfillment of the prophecy. There are many messianic predictions including Isaiah 9: 2-7. One of the Dead Sea scrolls was on the prophet Habakkuk. The major books of the prophets included Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel. The minor prophets included Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi. The prophets did not write long books. They wrote oracles in paragraph form. The book of Isaiah spans the most time. The books of prophecy are subversive entities. Even through prophecy sometimes spoke of disaster, oracles of hope come through. The books of prophecy are a witness to being parts of Scripture. The books of prophecy are part of God's Word.

God's Word: Wisdom and Law

God's Word: Wisdom and Law by ric gustafson

We read God's Word for guidance on how to live. Books on wisdom include Proverbs, Job and Ecclesiastes. These books contain short sayings or aphorisms which give advice on how to behave. The book of Proverbs contain several small collections of sayings that originated at different times. The books of Job and Ecclesiastes are more theological than Proverbs. These books ask more direct questions about the nature and character of God. Job consists of three cycles of dialogue between Job and his three friends. The book of Ecclesiastes talks about the meaning of life and that all is vanity. These two books quote proverbs that there is order and worth on earth. Proverbs may of been written by court scribes. Job and Ecclesiastes may have been written by individual writers.
The Book of the Covenant was a collection of law in the Hebrew Bible. This is in Exodus 21-23. This could be the oldest of the biblical law codes. The second collection of law is in Deuteronomy 12-26. The third set of law is in Leviticus 19-26. This is known as the Holiness Code.

the sea shell on the gulf shore

the sea shell on the gulf shore by ric gustafson

One day, a seashell washed up on the gulf shore. It imbedded itself into the sand and stayed there. The seashell was one of God's creations. All the shells were a little different color and shape than the others. The seashell enjoyed the gulf waves and the seagulls flying around. The shell watched as people were swimming and children were making sand castles.
One day, the shell watched as people approached carrying plastic bags. The shell watched as his friends were being picked up. The shell cried ' pick me pick me". " Pick me" the shell cried as people walked by. " I am one of God's creations also". Day after day, he sat in the sand.
One day, someone stopped and put him into a plastic bag. He was taken to a home, washed and then reunited with some of his friends in a display case. The seashell was so proud to be one of God's creations. He was a seashell on the gulf shore.

Free in Jesus: Free to celebrate

Free in Jesus: Free to celebrate by ric gustafson

Life is full of hardship and struggle. Sometimes it's hard to laugh and enjoy life. God wants us to celebrate being one of his own. God meets us right where we are. In the sad times of life, God knows when it's time to celebrate. When we celebrate, it is grace from God.
When our burdens of life are heavy, Jesus says let me have them and I will carry them. In Jesus, our mourning will become dancing. Our cries will become laughter. Our sorrow will become joy.
Praise God.

a car wash christian life page 5

a car wash Christian life page 5 by ric gustafson

The car is now at the end of the track and the car wash. At the end, you need to put the car into drive and your feet on the pedals. There is a machine on the left with a green light and a red light. The red light means stop and stay. The green light means you can leave the car wash. I began to wonder if the Christian life is like a red and green light.
Sometimes this life is fast and furious. Like a green light. And sometimes God wants us to stop and wait. Like a red light.  When God wants us to do something special for him, do we go on the green or do we stop on the red?.
My prayer is that we will be on the green for Jesus and not on the red. Praise God.

The End

a car wash christian life page 4

a carwash Christian life page 4 by ric gustafson

According to Psalm 51, create in me a clean heart o God.
Your car is now in neutral and going down the track by itself. Water is coming out from both sides. All of a sudden, white foamy suds are now washing the car. As the car keeps moving, water washes off the suds. As it nears the end, a huge vent begins to dry off the car.
At this point, I wonder is my spiritual life spot free or not?. God is a jealous God and wants 100 percent of our heart. Still the sinful part of our heart holds back and wants it for himself. God washes all of us, He wants 100 percent of us at all times. After the car is dried, the exit is near.

David walked into a room where carved and waxed shelves held their treasures. He noticed Charlene sitting at a table. On top was a Tiffany lamp. He walked past brass mini rails holding an array of books. " I figured you might be here".
She smiled. " I wanted to see if they had a different bible translation than what I have". She looked at David. " Was there something you wanted to tell me?".
" Yes". He held up a small bible. " My mother is loaning me her bible so I can look at it".
" That's great David". She grinned. " You won't regret your decision".
" Also". His voice hesitated. " My mother was able to arrange it so we could sit together at dinner tonight".
" Thank you". She stood up. " My brother and I will look forward to that".

Free in Jesus: Free to be weak

Free in Jesus: Free to be weak by ric gustafson

Even as Christians we are weak and vulnerable. Stress is part of our lives. After a while, our bodies rebel. But we do not want to admit our pain, stress and weakness. The fact is God wants us to admit our weaknesses. He wants us to confess it. God wants to hear that. He wants it in the light.
Then from the darkness of our life, he will flood it with light. He will redeem us and transform us.
When we are weak, we become strong through Jesus our Savior and Lord.

David was on one of the ship's stationary bicycles pedaling. Charlene was looking at a map on a far wall.
" This gymnasium is great". He climbed off and got onto a padded mechanical camel. " Tell me more about John 3:16".
" God so loved the world that he gave his beloved son".
He got off and walked toward a rowing machine. " God must have loved the world a lot to give his only son".
" If you simply believe in him, you will not perish but have eternal life".
" Eternal life?".
" David, eternal life means forever with God".
He got off and picked up a nearby dumbbell. " All he asks is that you simply believe".
" That's all he asks".
" I don't know Charlene". He wiped his face with a towel. " It sounds too good to be true".
" Food for thought". She smiled. " Would you and your mother care to dine with my brother and I tonight?".
" I'll ask my mother".

After you put your code number into the machine, you hit the enter button. Then you can proceed with the car wash. Then you will notice a large sign with instructions on it. The sign will tell you to put the car into neutral. Then you need to take your feet off of the pedals and let the track move your car.
Our Christian life is a struggle of our will versus God's will. We want to be on the pedals and drive the car ourselves. God wants us to take our feet off of the pedals and let him steer the car. God wants his will for our life not ours. Jesus says I love you let me be in control of your life.

Free in Jesus: Free to grieve

Free in Jesus: Free to grieve by ric gustafson

All of us grieve. There are events in our life that make us grieve. If we cannot grieve, we cannot be comforted. Jesus grieved. According to Isaiah 53:3, Jesus was a man of sorrows. The Sermon on the Mount starts with blessed are those that mourn. Jesus wept with Mary and Martha when Lazarus died. Jesus wept for Jerusalem. In the garden, Jesus wept for himself. We will all experience a tough season. But God who loves us so much says focus on me I have plans for you. Grief tears our heart wide open. We need to have faith and trust God to get us through the grief.

Free in Jesus: Free to rest

Free in Jesus: Free to rest by ric gustafson

We are used to running our race in Hebrews 12:1. But there will come a time when Jesus will tell us to rest. Can we stop and learn?. We are so involved in our own plans and goals, we forget God's plans. Jesus wants us to rest and see how he unfolds our life. When it is time, Jesus will hold our hand and show us where to walk. We need a soul rest. Jesus is the Vine, we are the branches.

After some sincere praying, the light turned green. The entrance door opened. When you drive into the carwash, you need to put the left side tires into a trough. Then you need to stop at a machine. You cannot go any further. When you pay for your carwash, you are given a code for this machine. You need to put this code into the machine in order to continue.
When I saw this machine, it reminded me of a crossroads in everyone's life. According to Revelation 3:20, I stand at the door and knock if anyone hears my voice and opens the door I will come in. There will come a day when everyone will have to make an eternal choice. Everyone will have two choices which comes with eternal consequences. You can tell Jesus no. And just like the carwash, you can back away and say no thanks. Or you can say yes to Jesus's simple message and be with him forever. If you say yes to Jesus, you can put your code into the machine and proceed with the car wash.

David pointed. " This must be the turbine engine room". They noticed stokers, covered with soot from head to toe, shoveling coal.
" Hello you two".
They turned to see Captain Smith smiling at them.
" Good afternoon Captain". David shook his hand. " I'm David Sharpston".
" Yes, I had the opportunity to meet your mother earlier today".
" I'm Charlene Moton".
He grinned. " Please to meet you".
" Captain, I have heard that this ship is unsinkable".
" Virtually". He smiled. " The ship was built with 16 watertight compartments".
Charlene grinned. " Is that good?".
" Even if we hit an iceberg head on". He pointed at a red button on a wall. " We can automatically close these doors and seal off the water".
David smiled. " Very impressive Captain".

We drive up to the entrance of the car wash. I notice to the left is a bright red light. The entrance door is closed. I put the Saturn into park and wait. As I sat there, I began to ponder something. Is the Christian life like this car wash. Sometimes things are going great and then all of a sudden the light turns red and the door closes.
According to Matthew 7:7, knock and it will be opened to you. The red light is still on and the door is still closed. " God please open this door now. I can't wait. God's timing is not our timing. David and Charlene stepped into the lift. He closed the iron gate. It opened onto a landing that was below the Grand Staircase. They walked out and observed the beautiful architecture.
She noticed the polished banisters. " This is as beautiful as God's beauty".
David admired the posts made with hand carved oak. " Tell me more about the bible".
" Even though the books were written by different authors". She looked up at the glass skylight. " It all comes together for a specific purpose and message".
They walked onto the Boat Deck. A steward was shining one of the lifeboats.
Charlene smiled. " How many boats are there?".
" We have fourteen regular and four collapsible boats".
" And that is for how many passengers?".
" The boats can carry 1176 passengers and crew".
" We have 2229 on board". David thought for a moment. " Is that enough boats for everyone?".
The steward grinned. " We have ten percent more lifeboats than is required by the Board of Trade".
They walked over to the railing. They watched the Irish coastland fade away.
" What is the bible's message?".
Charlene smiled. " Jesus has a simple message".
" What message is that?".
" Accept Jesus into your heart, repent of your sins and you will be with God forever".
David frowned. " It's not that easy".

I had watched my son enter Jerusalem on a white donkey. I waved a palm frond and watched as people threw down their outer garments and palm branches ahead of him. I noticed great sadness on my son's face.
Within a week, these same joyous people will turn on my son and chant for him to be crucified. Three days after we buried him in a tomb, two Mary's gave us the fabulous news. my son had risen from the dead. We later found out that one of his disciples named Judas Iscariot had betrayed him.
I hid in an upper room with my son's disciples and followers. One day, I felt a change. A blast of wind entered the room and fire descended on our heads. In joy, I lifted my hands to heaven and worshipped almighty God.
After so much time, I have decided to go back to Nazareth. I am going home to plant seeds and then to harvest.

Sometime in the future, we will be given new bodies that will last forever. As a Christian, I'm looking forward to being in the house of the Lord forever. It is a comfort to David and all believers.

As Rudder and his Rangers came onshore, they were met by heavy machine gun and sniper fire. Two US destroyers began bombing the top of the cliff. After only 5 minutes, the first Rangers reached the top of the cliff. For two days, Rudder and his Rangers held off the German counterattacks. When they were relieved on June 8, they were down to 90 out of 225 men.

The beach was nicknamed Omaha by the invasion planners. At 0630, troops in landing craft approached the beach. As the landing craft opened, German machine gun and mortar fire raked the landing troops. The high bluffs above Omaha beach was filled with 85 machine gun nests, 35 pillboxes and 8 gun batteries. These were all linked by trenches.
At first only a few men made it to the seawall. At 0730, General Norman Cota came ashore. He organized the few men at the seawall. At the top of the Omaha bluff, Cota and some troops captured Vierville only a quarter mile up the beach.
Down on Omaha Beach, the landing craft had stopped bringing in troops. The US Navy starting with the USS McCook began to bomb the German gun positions. By 1100, more troops were being dropped off at the beach. By 2230, more than 30000 troops had been dropped. More than 2000 American lives were lost during the landing. It was referred to as Bloody Omaha.

Psalm 23: he leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake

Psalm 23: he leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake by ric gustafson

God is planning a party to end all parties. We will see God close up. Can we be righteous to come?. Sometimes we do what is righteous. The truth is we are not perfect. Everything about God is righteous. Will God accept us even though we are not totally righteous. David in Psalm 23 says he leads me in the paths of righteous. What is this path?. This path is a winding narrow trail that goes up a steep hill. The path stops at a cross. At the foot of this cross are my sins. God sent his Son to die for me. Me who is not totally righteous. But God loves me anyway and saved ,me. Praise God.

Operation Overlord page 5

Operation Overlord page 5 by ric gustafson

The Allies chief enemy was not General Gerd von Rundstedt even though he was the commander in chief of the West. Their chief rival was the son of a Swabian schoolmaster. His name was Erwin Rommel. He was nicknamed ' the Desert Fox'. He built fortifications from the North Sea to the Mediterranean coast. He told Hitler himself that the war was lost and should seek peace terms.
He knew about the July 20 assassination attempt on Hitler's life. Two months later in September 1944, Rommel was given the chance to do the honorable thing. He committed suicide.

Operation Overlord page 4 by ric gustafson

One minute past midnight on June 6 1944, the largest parachute drop ever attempted began. More than 1,000 Allied planes dropped 24,000 paratroopers into hedgerows and meadows in Normandy. Even with heavy losses, the parachute troops confused the Germans as to the size of the force. The parachute troops played a key role in the success of the invasion.
It took over 800 c-47's each carrying 18 men. to carry 16,000 men across the Channel. The planes flew in a v formation. It took over three hours to reach their drop zones. Two Airborne Divisions were involved. The 101st and the 82. On the British side was the 6th Airborne. The 101st was led by Major General Maxwell Taylor. The 82nd was led by Major General Matthew Ridgway.. Also, thousands of soldiers were dropped by gliders.

bible verses: John 14: 25-31

bible verses: John 14: 25-31 by ric gustafson

Jesus does not want us to worry. He wants us to relax in God's goodness and faithfulness. Jesus knew his disciples would worry about his upcoming death. He tells them peace I leave with you my peace I give to you. He told them do not let your hearts be troubled. He also tells them to not be afraid. We need to trust Jesus and the Holy Spirit. God loves us more than anything else.
Praise God.

In 1944, the question around the world was would the ' Second Front' happen in Europe. So where would 5000 ships, 150,000 soldiers and thousands of paratroopers gather at?. The invasion was supposed to be in early May. It changed dates due to the landing craft.
The Germans knew the invasion was coming. They thought the invasion would come at Pas de Calais. In England, 163 new airfields, 1500 tanks and two million tons of weapons and supplies.
The invasion was planned for Monday June 5. The weather turned ugly. Eisenhower gave the ok for Tuesday June 6 as a go for the largest seaborne invasion to finally start.

Operation Overlord page 2

Operation Overlord page 2 by ric gustafson

General Dwight D Eisenhower was frustrated. Storms on June 5 was delaying the invasion. The forecast for June 6 was a small window. Eisenhower was a young officer who had chosen a career in the military. He knew that only a cross channel invasion of France and then into the heart of Germany was what needed to be done. The United States and Britain were not ready to fight like that in 1942 or 1943. Eisenhower commanded the invasions of North Africa, Sicily and Italy.
By 1944, Eisenhower was the Supreme Commander of the Allied forces. He was driven, demanding and full of energy.
After getting the weather report for June 6, he did not hesitate. He said let's go.

bible verses: Genesis 1: 26-31 by ric gustafson

All of us were created in God's image. God created us male and female. According to today's bible verse, we were all created in God's image. It does not matter to God what we look like on the outside. What matters to God is what is in our heart. We can smile knowing that no matter what we look like, God loves us more than anything else in this world.

bible verses: Philippians 3: 7-14

bible verses: Philippians 3: 7-14 by ric gustafson

The Apostle Paul knew what his old life was. But now, he had a new life in Jesus. In this bible verse, he proclaims that he is pressing on toward the goal. He knew what the prize was. Paul knew the power and beauty in a relationship with Jesus Christ. The ultimate prize to Paul was to be one of Jesus's forever. To Christians like myself, that is our ultimate prize also. Praise God.
