It was March 19 1944 and Obersturmbannfuhrer Adolf Eichmann was now 38 years old. He was dressed in a pale gray SS uniform. He had dark blond hair, narrow lips, a long nose and blue eyes. He was leaving Mauthausen with his troops to enter Budapest Hungary. The concentration camp was on the northern edge of the Danube River in upper Austria.
Twelve hours earlier, 11 German divisions had crossed the Hungarian border. Eichmann was ordered by his boss Reichsfuhrer SS Heinrich Himmler to start combing the country for Jews. Those physically fit were to be delivered to labor camps. Those unfit were to be exterminated. It was Eichmann's job to do something with 725,000 estimated Jews in that country.
Eichmann drew up his plan for the Hungarian Jews with 8 years of experience at the job. He was in charge of Jewish Affairs for Department IVB. Eichmann was in charge of executing Hitler's policy regarding the Jews. The first part of his plan was to isolate the Jews. He would make them wear a yellow star. Then he would control all aspects of their lives. To do this he had to have the help of the Hungarian government. He was a master at his job. He had perfected it in countries all over Europe. He was good at his job.
