Lent 2014 day 13

Lent 2014 day 13 by ric gustafson

Matthew 8:8- ' But the centurion replied " just say the word and my servant will be healed".

Israel was an oppressed nation in Roman hands. Taxes were high, Jewish religious leaders bowed to Roman rule and Roman punishment was swift and harsh. It was surprising that a Roman soldier would ask Jesus, a Jewish preacher for help. Jesus agreed to heal his servant but was stopped by the centurion. He said that he had authority as a soldier but that Jesus had an even greater authority. The centurion knew that all Jesus had to do was command it and it would be done.
The centurion had great faith and recognized Jesus's power. The centurion knew that Jesus had authority over sin and death. This soldier's faith pleased Jesus.
