Robert Todd Lincoln page 1 by ric gustafson
In 1885, Robert Todd Lincoln, the only surviving child of Mary and Abraham Lincoln finished his term as Secretary of War. He was forty five, a Chicago attorney and had just served under President James Garfield and Chester Arthur. By 1888, he was thinking about running for President.
Robert Todd Lincoln was the oldest of the Lincoln's four sons and the only one to live to maturity. He graduated from Harvard and then started to practice law in Chicago. He became a leader of the Pullman Car Company and died a multimillionaire.
He never used his middle name but went by T. He protected his father's reputation and his personal letters and artifacts. He was a hardworking man, a family man, businessman and did not allow his father's legacy to control his life. He always refused a biography of himself to be done.
