Operation Valkyrie page 4 by ric Gustafson
After the attempts on Hitler's life in 1938, opportunities began to recede. Because of Hitler's military victories, the chances became even fewer. Any rare chance was dogged by bad luck. Among the conspiracy lacked authority. By 1943, Hitler's victories made it hard to attempt a successful coup.
One coup idea was to put Hitler on trial and impeach him. The conspirators knew that to try and topple the regime would be to risk full scale civil war. It would divide the army and that was hard to contemplate. They knew that in order to have a successful coup, the SS would have to be neutralized. Not only were they concerned about eliminating Hitler, they were also worried about protecting their country, homes and families.
The Western Allies were not helping because they only wanted a unconditional surrender. The need to eliminate Hitler and his hierarchy was becoming more obvious. The conspirators debated, quarreled and worked at cross purposes with each other. No matter how much they talked, prayed, complained and planned, they were incapable of action.
At this time, a person will join their ranks and change their thinking.
