a slice of pizza page 1 by ric Gustafson

Is there anybody who does not love pizza?. I can remember going to a place called Big Fred's and enjoying their pizza since I was a kid.
So where did pizza start?. Records show pizza going back as far as 6th century BC. Soldiers led by Persian king Darius the Great. They would bake flatbread and cover it with cheese and dates on their battle shields. In the 16th century, Neapolitans that would later become people from Naples began to enjoy tomato topped pies. In 1830, a restaurant in Naples began offering pizzas cooked in wood ovens. Queen Margherita of Savoy in 1889 enjoyed her pizza so much it was named after her.
Pizza arrived here in the late 1800's when Italian Americans in their homes and neighborhoods began to make them. Soldiers returning from World War II began craving that Italian dish. The pizza craze had started.
Next we will look at Neapolitan style pizza.
