Goebbels page 1

Goebbels page 1 by ric Gustafson

It was April 30 1945 and Dr Joseph Goebbels had become the Chancellor of the Reich for only a few hours. He was now trying to avoid his own suicide and he now wrote to the commander in chief of the Soviet forces. Hitler had made him Chancellor and Grand Admiral Karl Donitz as President of the Reich. Goebbels now wanted to propose a ceasefire and negotiate peace terms with the Soviet commander.
Chief of the general staff, General Hans Krebs delivered the letter to Major General Vasily Chuikov who was commander of the 8th Guards. He contacted Marshal Georgy Zhukov who was commander of all the forces attacking Berlin. Zhukov told Soviet Dictator Joseph Stalin about the letter. Stalin replied that there would be no ceasefire. Stalin wanted all the German forces to surrender. Krebs told Goebbels the reply on May 1. Goebbels informed Donitz of Hitler's death and then told the bunker's staff that they were free to break out and save themselves.
Goebbels knew the time had come to plan his own death and the death of his family.
