Margaret Tobin Brown page 10

Margaret Tobin Brown page 10 by ric gustafson

From Lifeboat 6, everyone watched in horror as half of the huge liner slid into the other half. Twenty nine boilers, dining tables, wicker chairs, grand pianos, china cabinets and steamer trunks filled with personal belongings. Then the liner rose out of the water at the stern. The lights on the liner flickered and then went dark.
Margaret could hear shouts and cries from the now fast sinking ship. Then the liner seemed to break into two. Margaret and the others watched in horror as the huge liner quietly went under the water. Then everyone witnessed a horrible sound. It was the sound of hundreds of people crying in terror. Everyone including Margaret wanted to go back and try to rescue someone. Hichens said no.
For two hours, Margaret and the other women rowed in the dark. There was not light just stars. They rowed among ice and icebergs. After another hour and a half passed, Margaret encouraged everyone to row. Margaret's eyes began to deceive her. She couldn't judge time or space. Some people were already giving up. Sometimes Margaret wondered if she was going to join them.
