Jesus: Matthew 22:17 by ric gustafson
They tried to trap him with a question. Jesus knew what they were doing. Each nation uses it's own coin. They used a Roman coin. They knew it was justly due. If they used Caesar's coins, they must pay the Roman tribute. They knew they had him this time. He must pay Caesar's tribute. And if he doesn't, it goes against Christian duty. They knew they had him either way he answered the question. They were confident that they finally had him trapped. The teachers were very confidant that they had him this time.
But Jesus knew what they were doing. He knew their hearts. Jesus asked them a question. Their plot backfired. The truth is Jesus loves us more than anything else.
