The people of Algeria were Berbers followed by Romans, Phoenicians, Vandals and then Arabs. Turkey ruled from 1518 to 1830. In 1830, France took over. Algeria declared independence in July 1962. In 1965, an army coup led by Houari Boumedienne held power until 1978.
In 1995, Liamine Zeroual won the presidential election. Starting in 1999, Abdelaziz Bouteflika became president. He was reelected in 2004. In 2014, Bouteflika was reelected. Instead of a fifth term in 2019, Bouteflika resigned. In Dec 2019, Abdelmadjid Tebboune became president.
