President Lincoln put the newspaper aside. He signed two documents. Then he was ready for his first visitor. Speaker of the House Schuyler Colfax walked in. Lincoln liked him and respected him. They talked about Colfax's ambition to become a member of Lincoln's cabinet. Colfax wanted Lincoln's promise that he would consult Congress on postwar policy.
Next to come in was Congressman Cornelius Cole. It is not known what their discussion was. Not far from the White House was the War Department. General Grant was finishing up his war work. One issue he had to deal with was coming up with a plan to reduce the army to a peacetime level.
President Lincoln had asked if the General and his wife wanted to join them for the play that evening. Grant declined. He wanted to see his two children instead.
