One day without warning, Bitty Schram found out she was going to do her crying scene with Tom Hanks. Only in the business for ten months, Schram cried every take. When Hanks yelled " There's no crying in baseball" Schram cried. Penny could see and hear everyone laugh. The first AD Mike Haley got the chance to play the umpire in the scene. Penny could tell right away " there's no crying in baseball" was going to be the funniest line in the whole film. Even when he wasn't required to be on the set, Hanks normally hung around anyway. His son Colin helped out on set doing various things. Sometimes Tom got to be the third camera director. He was hoping any experience behind the camera would help him with his dream of becoming a director himself one day.
