Mr President page 1

Mr President page 1 by ric gustafson

Sitting at a small wooden desk in his study is George Washington. He was a Revolutionary War hero, Now he is a citizen farmer. He was now nearly 55 years old. He was heavily involved with the formation of the new United States of America. It was early in the morning and Washington was sorting through paperwork. He owned an 8000 acre plantation. He was meticulous in keeping financial records.
It was February of 1787 and in two months he was going to Philadelphia to be part of a Constitutional Convention. Delegates from twelve states were going to determine the best way to choose a national leader. Other issues to be discussed were how many representatives each state will have in Congress. Also to be discussed was how to count slaves for taxation and representation.
Washington's father Augustine died of a fever. George inherited the bulk of his father's property. George's mother Mary lived on a small plantation outside Fredericksburg. She was always asking her son for money. Martha, George's wife, was embarrassed by Mary's financial requests.
George's mother Mary Washington died on August 26 1789. Six months earlier her son on Feb 4 1789 became President of the United States.
