Mr President page 7

Mr President page 7 by ric gustafson

Thomas Jefferson was eager to become President of the United States. It was to be in Washington DC. He woke up early at the Washington boardinghouse he was staying at. He shaved and had breakfast at 8:00 am. The boardinghouse was on the corner of New Jersey Avenue and C Street. He enjoyed a breakfast of coffee, muffins and cold ham.
Jefferson's inauguration was a just a few blocks from where he was staying. He decided to walk to the Capitol Building. Jefferson was 57 years old. He decided to wear just a simple plain suit. Behind him as he walked was a crowd of police officers, local militia, congressmen and senators. It was a winter day but not too cold. Jefferson walked up the Capitol steps. He then entered the Senate Chamber. It was filled by more than a thousand guests. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall gives the oath of office.
President Jefferson had his critics including President Adams and Martha Washington. But there were others who liked Jefferson including James Madison of Virginia. Madison will become President Jefferson's Secretary of State. Now President Jefferson needed to hash out his plans for the United States.
