John asked Dan if he wanted to join his National Lampoon touring company. Aykroyd did but some complications stood in the way. One was that he had just signed on for another Second City show in Toronto. Plus, someone had to run his 505 Club. John understood. They agreed to meet again in New York.
In New York, John assembled his National Lampoon road show. The first to arrive in Sept 1974 was Harold Ramis. John started his new stage show in Philadelphia. The show's material was Second City and Lampoon. Others in the new show included Gilda Radner, Joe Flaherty and Bill Murray.
During the July 4th 1974 weekend, NBC President Herb Schlosser wanted to talk to Dick Ebersol. Schlosser asked Ebersol about developing a weekend late night show.
One day, a young Canadian named Lorne Michaels pitched an idea to NBC executives. By Feb 1975, Michaels was pitching a late night Saturday show called ' Saturday Night'. The show would be live from the RCA building in New York City. On April 1 1975, Michaels signed a contract for 17 shows. Now, Michaels had to find a cast.
