Titanic 2014: Genesis page 1 by ric gustafson
On a warm summer evening in 1907, a Daimler Benz stops at 27 Chelsea Street in London. Mr and Mrs Joseph Bruce Ismay get in and drive to Downshire House. This was the home of Lord and Lady Pirrie. Ismay was the Managing Director of the White Star Line. Pirrie was the senior partner and chairman of the board of Harland and Wolff, a Belfast Ireland shipyard.
Joseph Bruce Ismay was the eldest son of Thomas H Ismay who was a shipping magnate and Mayport boat builder. Thomas Ismay acquired the White Star Line in 1867 and then called it the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company. The elder Ismay knew that the profit for the company would come from the North Atlantic transatlantic passenger run. In 1870, Thomas Ismay created a holding company called Ismay Imrie and Company. One of it's first contracts was for Harland and Wolff of Belfast to build a fleet of iron steamships for White Star.
