Agent Tim McCarthy opened the right rear door of the limo. Right before he gets in, President Reagan waves to the crowd. On this day, he is not wearing a bullet proof vest. Hinckley pulls out the pistol and shoots.
The first bullet strikes Press Secretary James Brady in the head. The second bullet strikes Police Officer Thomas Delahanty. The third shot strikes no one. The fourth bullet strikes Secret Service Agent Tim McCarthy. The fifth shot strikes no one. The sixth and final bullet strikes President Reagan under his left arm. The bullet enters his lung and stops one inch from his heart.
President Reagan is rushed to George Washington University Hospital.
John Hinckley JR is taken into custody.
