Mervyn LeRoy was born in San Francisco in 1900. He started in vaudeville before he was sixteen. In 1923, he was in a short and then moved to Hollywood. He started out as a Hollywood wardrobe handler. He directed his first movie ' No Place To Go' in 1927. His career at MGM started with directing ' Tugboat Annie' in 1933.
LeRoy became a close associate to Louis B Mayer. LeRoy was chosen by Mayer to produce the Wizard of Oz. The budget for the film was set at $ 3.7 million. Making the film was difficult and the shoot took twenty two weeks.
After Oz, LeRoy became an independent producer. Mervyn LeRoy passed away in 1987.
