Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13 1743 in Albemarle County Virginia. He was the third child of Peter Jefferson and his wife Jane Randolph. At age 14 his father died at age 49. At Williamsburg, he attended College of William and Mary. At age 19, he graduated and was admitted to the Virginia bar in 1767. In 1769, he took a seat in the Virginia House of Burgesses. He became part of the Virginia delegation to the Second Continental Congress. In 1779, he was elected governor of Virginia. In 1782, Jefferson's wife Martha died after giving birth to their seventh child.
In 1789, he became Washington's first secretary of state. In 1800, Jefferson decided to run against Adams. Jefferson along with political associate James Madison and propagandist James Callender, they went to work campaigning.
On February 11 1801, then President of the Senate and Vice President to John Adams Thomas Jefferson became President of the United States.
