Martha prepared a meal for Jesus and his disciples. After it was over, their was a knock at the back gate. Lazarus opened it to reveal their friend Simon.
" Peace be on this house". He turned toward Jesus. " Lord, do you remember that you said the next time you and your friends were in Bethany you would be guests at my home?".
" Yes Simon, I remember".
" Will you and your friends come tomorrow evening?".
" Yes, we will come".
Simon turned toward Lazarus. " You and your sisters are welcome to come also".
" Thank you for the invitation Simon".

Martha and Mary stood by a pillar as Jesus turned over the moneychangers tables and stopped their business. After all the commotion was over, Martha observed Judas Iscariot at the far end of the courtyard talking to a scribe. Something about that man scares me she thought as she began to shiver from fright.
Jesus began to talk to those who were still in the courtyard of the Temple. " A man planted a vineyard, leased it and then went to a far country". Martha began to listen closely. " At vintage time he sent a servant and the vinedressers beat him and sent him away empty handed along with a second and a third". " So the owner decided to send his own son and when the vinedressers saw him they killed him". " What do you think the owner of the vineyard would do?".
" We don't know" yelled a priest.
" The owner of the vineyard would destroy the vinedressers and give the vineyard to others".
" No" cried the crowd.
" The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone".

Martha stood near Jesus as they stopped near the Mount of Olives.
Jesus pointed at Peter and John. " Go into the opposite village as you enter it you will find a colt that has never been ridden".
Martha listened intently to the conversation.
" Loose it and bring it here".
" What if someone asks why we are doing this?".
" Just say that the Lord has need of it".
The crowd sat down until the two disciples had returned with the colt.
Martha watched as some of the people threw their cloaks on the colt as Jesus sat down on it. Others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road ahead of Jesus.
Martha heard people shout ' Hosanna in the highest, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord".
A Pharisee yelled out from the crowd. " Rabbi, rebuke your followers".
Jesus stared at the ruler. " If my followers keep silent, the stones would cry out".
Jesus wept as they entered the city.

Martha served their supper as Lazarus and their friend Hanniel were deep in conversation.
" Hanniel, I don't know how I can go to Jerusalem after what just happened".
" My friend I have news from there".
" The rulers have offered a ransom for Jesus so they can arrest him".
Martha stared at their friend. " He taught openly in the Temple why didn't they arrest him then?".
" The rulers are afraid of the people" their friend said as he stroked his beard. " Lazarus, I also have a warning for you".
" What is that?".
" Along with Jesus, the rulers consider you dangerous also".
" Why?".
" Because many now believe in Jesus thanks to you" was his reply. " Be careful".

Herod, in his floor length robe, was sitting on some cushions and listening to his counselor.
" Sire, old Simeon has always believed in a vision of looking into the face of the Christ".
Herod sneered back. " It just happened that he died after seeing a child".
" Anna, who also lived at the Temple, also saw the child and proclaimed him to be the Messiah".
" What was the child doing in the Temple anyway?".
" Sire, under the law of Moses a Jewish male child must be presented to Jehovah".
" I see" Herod replied as he scratched his chin as he thought. " Send for Mica".

Simeon watched through his old tired eyes as the young mother and father brought in the child. They wanted him to carry out the custom of the Law.
Simeon picked up the child in his tired arms and blessed God. " Now Lord, you are releasing your bond servant to depart in peace, according to your word". He looked at the child with love in his eyes. " For my eyes have seen your salvation which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples". He looked at Mary and Joseph. " A light of revelation to the Gentiles and the glory of your people Israel".

After three hours of darkness, Jesus gave a startling cry. " Eloi eloi lama sabachthani".
" He is calling out for Elijah" sneered one of the soldiers.
A little later, Jesus spoke. " I thirst".
Flavius pointed to a soldier who put some wine vinegar on a hyssop stick and put it up to Jesus's lips.
Jesus tasted it.A few more minutes passed. His breath came in short gasps. All of a sudden, Jesus cried out again. " It is finished". A moment later, " Father, into your hands I commit my spirit". Jesus bowed his head.
All of a sudden, the ground shook as if it was an earthquake. The great curtain which blocked the way into the Holy of Holies was torn from top to bottom.
Flavius looked up at the corpse of Jesus. " Surely that man was the Son of God".
An hour before sunset, the four soldiers brought mallets and smashed the legs and knees of the two robbers. When they came to Jesus, He already looked dead.
To make sure, Cassius took a spear and jabbed it into his side. Blood and water came out.

Cassius and the other three soldiers sat on the ground and tossed dice for Jesus's seamless robe. They watched as the people below Jesus's cross began to taunt him and throw insults at him.
One of the two robbers now taunted him also. " If you are the Christ, save yourself and us".
The other robber spoke up. " We are getting what we deserve but this man has done nothing wrong". He looked at Jesus. " Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom".
Jesus slowly turned his head. " Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise".
After three hours, blood from Jesus's wounds dripped from his body.
All of a sudden, darkness covered the land.

One soldier climbed the ladder and with the others hoisted the crossbeam up. One soldier crossed his legs and forced his feet against the beam. They put an iron nail through each of his feet. The soldier removed the ladder and ropes and now Jesus was hanging by the nails. One soldier now stood guard beneath Jesus.
After a while, the blood from the nail wounds stuck together and Jesus struggled for breath. A soldier put the ladder up again and hammered a placard to the top of the crossbeam. It read in Aramaic, Latin and Greek ' Jesus of Nazareth, the king of the Jews'.
A member of the Sanhedrin standing nearby complained. " He claimed to be the king of the Jews".
The soldier shrugged his shoulders. " Bring that up with the Govenor".

The procession slowly walked through the Garden Gate and then stopped at the edge of a rocky outcrop.
Flavius pointed to Cassius and another soldier. " Have the two robbers drop their beams and then make them stand next to a tree trunk on the left and right".
Flavius pointed to a third soldier. " Tell the African to drop his crossbeam beside the tree trunk in the middle".
Slaves used the ladders and arranged the ropes. The three prisoners were given drugged wine. The two robbers swallowed the wine yet Jesus tried it and then refused it.
The soldiers threw Jesus onto the ground and stripped him of his clothing. Two soldiers stretched out his arms as another soldier pushed the crossbeam underneath them.
A soldier picked up an iron nail, knelt on one of Jesus's arms and put the nail above the palm. With a sharp blow, the nail went through Jesus's hand into the crossbeam. The soldier did the same with the other palm.
As the hammer blows echoed through the Skull, Jesus said " Father, forgive them, they know not what they do".

Cassius watched as friends of Barabbas carried him off.
Inside the barrack, Flavius took command. " Slaves, take these ladders, ropes, nails and hammers and follow me". A crossbeam was put on the bloody back of one of the robbers and then on the back of the other robber.
Flavius pointed at Cassius and three other soldiers. " You will be the execution detail". " Follow me".
One soldier led Jesus out of the barrack. They stopped and the heavy crossbeam was put on Jesus's torn back. The procession started down a street and then Jesus staggered and fell from the weight on his weak back. The loss of blood, lack of sleep and food had weakened him. He got up and the procession began again.
Jesus fell again and Flavius walked over to make sure that Jesus was not going to die.
Cassius saw a strong African walking up the street. " You, come here".
Simon from Cyrene walked up to the Roman soldier.
" Carry this crossbeam".
They put the heavy crossbeam on the strong back of the African and the procession started again.

God hopes that you will hear his whisper and he also has an invitation. God simply wants you to know him. Instead of using power and glory, God uses a quiet whisper. To hear God's voice we need to be near him. God wants an intimate relationship with us and will do whatever he has to in order to get our attention. God invites us to become one of his followers.
In order to become the people of God, we need to learn to hear God's whisper.

Psalm 5:3- ' In the morning O Lord you hear my voice, in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation'

Sometimes no matter how hard we listen for God's voice, he is silent. There are several reasons.
First, we may have asked the wrong question. We may have asked for something that God is not ready to reveal to us yet.
Second, we may be out of God's timing. We must remember that we are on a different timetable than God. His timing is always perfect.
Third, we may not be able to handle the answer. It is possible that we are not strong enough to handle it.
Fourth, sin blocks our ability to hear God. When we are obedient with small things, God will have us do larger things for him.
Sometimes God says no in order to get us out of a situation.

Job 37:5- ' God's voice thunders in marvelous ways, he does great things beyond our understanding'

God can speak to us in unlimited ways. God is not satisfied with how long we pray to him, he wants more. God uses Scripture to whisper to us. In order to know God's voice, we must read his Word. He wants us to read, think over and be deeply fed by it. Sometimes God communicates with us through visions and dreams. We hear God's quiet voice with our Spirit. Sometimes God uses our life experiences to talk to us. God will use circumstance to speak to us. Sometimes he uses books, movies or music to get our attention.
God will do or use whatever he has to to get our attention and talk to us.

Job 23:12- ' I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread'

You can hear God everywhere. Work, home, doing errands, walking along the beach. God desires for you to have a quiet place so the two of you can talk. How do we begin to learn to hear God's voice?".
First, we need a seeking heart. Sometimes he looks for us and sometimes he plays hide and seek and we need to find him. God smiles when he knows we are trying to seek him.
Second, we need a bible based heart. God tries to talk to us through his Word. If we want to really know God, we need to study his Word.
Third, we need a listening heart. Hearing God's voice requires us to listen. We need a quiet heart and to be still. As we spend more time with God, we will begin to seek his presence. We need to pray with our eyes and ears open.
Fourth, we need a patient heart. We need to follow God's schedule not ours.
Lastely, we need an obedient heart. We need to obey God or talking to him means nothing. God expects us to instantly obey him. If we are obedient, there are rewards.

He heard a whipping noise and a flaming arrow hit the tree next to him. He glanced at it to see that it said ' Hate' on it.
Albert ran as more flaming arrows came through the trees. He began to run up a steep trail and then hid behind a large tree. He surveyed the green valley below and to the right saw a light. He looked at it closer and noticed that it was a huge steel fortress with no windows. Albert noticed that Satan's flaming arrows were not penetrating it.
Albert ran down to the edge of the clearing as the flaming arrows flew around him. He ran toward the fortress as a flaming arrow named ' Anger' hit the ground next to him. He ran to the left side of the fortress, ducked an arrow and then ran toward the front door.
Albert knocked on the huge steel door. A little slot opened up. " What's the good word?".
" Jesus Christ who died for my sins".

How does your story end?. How's that to grab your attention . To be honest, that is how I am feeling right now. I am writing this as I am eating lunch at work. Earlier this week, I found out the worst news I could ever hear. Is this the end of my story?. I pondered that after the news sunk in. I gave my life to Christ in the 8th grade and have been following him ever since.
Storms have come my way in life and God has always protected me and kept me safe. I know that he has a plan for my life and I am trying to follow that plan with all of my heart.
This storm is different and I know that. I know that God loves me and will always hold my hand. But as I eat my lunch, I am pondering one question. At age 49, is this the prelude to the end of my story?.

Isaiah 55:8- ' For my thoughts are not your thoughts neither are your ways my ways'

God could communicate with us in a variety of ways. He could do it in big ways that would get your attention. Instead he uses a subtle approach, he whispers.
One of the ways that God communicates with us is through revelation. When he tells us about himself or his Word, it uncovers a new eternal truth for us. Sometimes, God whispers to us to give us guidance and protection.
God also whispers comfort to us. He knows what we need and we are never forgotten or left alone. Sometimes, God whispers a warning or a promise of what is to come. Sometimes, God whispers to us just because he loves us.

Isaiah 30:21- ' Your ears will hear a word behind you, this is the way walk in it'

We live in a world full of voices. Television, advertisers, banks and credit card offers are all trying to get our attention. But the most important voice we need to hear is from God. We make decisions based on what we hear and know. If we are not hearing from God, what will we base our decisions on?".
God wants to speak to us regarding big decisions in our lives along with the everyday little stuff. God has a specific plan for our lives but also has the right to change that plan.
As human beings, we are not sure what is best for our lives. We have limited vision and knowledge. God is a limitless God who has an incredible plan for each of our lives. If we hear and obey his voice, he will protect, guide, comfort and shower us with his blessings.

Billy raised the shield in front of him. " You need the protection of this shield to ward off all of Satan's fiery darts".

" Ok, we will take these" Bruce said as he walked toward the cash register with the Belt of Truth and the Breastplate of Righteousness.
Billy stopped him and pointed at his shoes. " You need a new pair of shoes".
" These shoes are just fine".
" I have some shoes called the Shoes of the Gospel".
" Shoes of the Gospel?".
Billy smiled. " Do you have peace in your heart?".
" Yes, with this breastplate protecting me".
" Do you believe in the Scriptures?".
" Yes".
" With the Shoes of the Gospel on our feet, we can find and point people to the truth of God's Word".

" Let's check out" Bruce said as he walked toward the cash register with his new belt.
" Before you go" Billy said as he stepped into his path. " Have you heard of the Breastplate of Righteousness?".
" No, what is it?".
" You have the Belt of Truth but now you need something to protect your heart".
" Protect my heart?".
Billy smiled at the couple. " Our heart determines the course of our lives".
" What does God want in my life?".
" Faith and love".

the story of Martha page 22

the story of Martha page 22 by ric gustafson

" Martha" Jesus said with a sigh. " Where have you laid him?".
The two sisters led him to a cave that had a large stone rolled up at the entrance.
" Take the stone away".
Martha gave Jesus a strange look. " Lord, there is going to be a stench, he's been dead four days".
He looked at Martha. " Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?".
Nathan and two others pushed until the large stone was moved away from the entrance.
Martha covered her nose because of the stench.
Jesus raised his eyes toward heaven. " Father, I thank you that you have heard me and I always know that you hear me". He stared at the entrance to the cave. " Lazarus, come forth".
Martha, Mary and the others stared at the entrance. All of a sudden, they heard a noise coming from inside the cave. A dark figure now stood in the doorway.
They all gasped as a person bound with grave clothes and a burial cloth started to walk toward them.
Jesus smiled. " Loosen his grave clothes and let him go".

Martha was going to say some angry things to Jesus but instead fell onto her knees. " Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died". She looked up at Jesus. " But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you".
Jesus helped her to her feet. " Your brother will rise again".
" I know that he will rise again in the resurrection".
Jesus smiled at her. " I am the resurrection and the life, he who believes in me though he may die, he shall live". He gave Martha a hug. " Do you believe that whosoever lives and believes in me shall never die?".
How could she deny his power and miracles. " Yes Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world".
Martha turned to Nathan. " Did you tell Jesus how sick my brother was?".
" Yes" was the reply. " He waited two days to come".
" Why?".
" He said that he was going to wake him up".

Martha watched her brother's body as Mary went to get Anna. As she waited, she wondered what good it would do if Jesus came now. Now her brother was dead she thought as Mary and Anna returned carrying ointment and spices. The three women quietly and carefully prepared their brother's body for burial.
Men from the village came and took the body to a tomb and then sealed it up with a stone. After friends had come to say their goodbyes, Martha and Mary went home. Mary was comforted by townspeople but Martha bitterly sat in a corner of the house.
' Why didn't he come' she wondered as tears came streaming down her face.

Martha felt her brother's brow. It was warm with fever. She put a cool cloth on his forehead and tried to get him to drink some water. " We must send for Jesus" she said as she stared at her sister. " He will know what to do".
Their friend Nathan spoke up. " I will go find him, I know where he is".
Martha shook her head in approval.
He put on his cloak and left.
The first day their friend was gone, Lazarus's breathing got heavier.
The second day, Martha went to the courtyard gate and wondered when Jesus was coming.
By the fourth day, Martha and Mary held their brother's hand as he breathed his last.
Jesus still had not come.

Eamon took the denarius that was in his hand and showed it to the Rabbi.
" Whose inscription is on it?.
The two looked at each other. " Caesar's".
" Then give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's".
Jesus sat down again with his followers.
Eamon walked away but tears began to form in Julius's eyes. He walked up to Jesus. " I'm sorry, we tried to trick you".
" I know" Jesus quietly replied as he stood up and hugged the young man." Go and tell Caiaphas your faith has saved you".
Julius walked into Caiaphas's court alone and saw the Chief Priest and Malchus his servant sitting at a table.
" Back so soon" he said with a grin. " Were you able to trick him?".
" No!". Julius threw his wages at Caiaphas's feet. " I will not try to trick an innocent man".
Caiaphas frowned. " What does that have to do with me?".
" For you nothing" Julius said as he walked toward the door. " For me everything".
