a Charlie Brown Christmas page 2 by ric gustafson
Charles Schulz was working on a new project. In 1950, Schulz started a new comic strip. It was called ' Peanuts'. Schultz wanted to bring his Peanuts characters to a new medium and a new audience. Schultz also wanted to have a message of faith included in the TV special. Schultz wanted the character of Linus to recite from the book of Luke chapter 2. Schultz wanted Linus to tell the true meaning of Christmas.
Schultz was told by his partners that someone reciting bible passages on a tv special was suicide. Schultz wanted his tv special to go where no tv special had gone before. Arguing with his two partners only gave Schultz more resolve. Schultz wanted his tv special to communicate the true meaning of Christmas.
Lee Mendelson flew to New York to screen ' A Charlie Brown Christmas' for CBS programming executives. Schultz knew his conviction and resolve might succeed or be career suicide.
Schultz nervously waited to find out.
