Before Dorothy page 12

Before Dorothy page 12 by ric gustafson

Emily, Dorothy and Henry could not keep their eyes off of the woman before them. She wore khaki green and her hair was in perfect golden waves.
" So tell me Miss?". Henry's voice hesitated. " How did you happen to land your plane in our field?".
" My name is Adelaide Watson". She pointed. " This here is my duster plane".
Dorothy was running around the plane. " Auntie Em, I watched Miss Adelaide fall out of the sky".
" My duster plane was having engine trouble". She sighed. " Your field was the best place to land".
Dorothy noticed a number on the plane. " Miss Adelaide, what does the number 99 mean?".
" I'm part of a group called the 99's". She smiled. " Our president is an aviator named Amelia Earhart".
Dorothy's eyes got bigger. " You know Amelia Earhart?".
" Sure do". She quickly replied. " I am going to be performing at the circus coming here next week".
" The circus". Dorothy began running around the plane again. " Please Auntie Em can I go?".
Emily smiled. " Yes, you can go".

Psalms: Psalm 7

Psalms: Psalm 7 by ric gustafson

Psalm 7 says O Lord My God in you I take refuge save me from all my pursuers and rescue me Lest I become like the lion's prey to be torn to pieces with no one to rescue me. Jesus's heart went out to suffering people. They were like sheep without a shepherd.
Do me justice O Lord because I am just and because of the innocence that is mine Let the malice of the wicked come to an end but sustain the just O searcher of heart and soul O just God. According to Mark 6, we are like sheep without a shepherd.
A shield before me is God who saves the upright of heart a just judge is God a God who punishes day by day. Is it a mystery that innocent people suffer at the hands of evil people?.

Midnight on the Potomac page 5

Midnight on the Potomac page 5 by ric gustafson

During the war, no actor captivated the country more than John Wilkes Booth. The promising young actor filled seats like no other from New England to the Mississippi River. From 1861 to 1865, theatre goers snatched up seats to see the young Shakespeare actor.
But there was a dark side to the young actor. Deep down, John Wilkes Booth was a Confederate. Even though he was born and raised in Maryland, Booth's family never owned slaves. Booth's brother Edwin was an outspoken Union man.
In July 1864, Booth traveled to Boston. He registered at the Parker House. On July 26 1864, Booth met four other men. The men talked about the condition of the Confederacy. They talked about how to end the war. Everyone gave a suggestion.
When it was Booth's turn, he suggested that he could kidnap President Lincoln. Booth knew that Lincoln went quite often to the Soldiers Home. Booth knew that Lincoln went there alone and unguarded. Booth's simple plan was to capture Lincoln at the Soldiers Home. Then he would carry the President to the Potomac River. Then he would take the President by boat across the river. Then Booth would take the President all the way to Richmond.
The other men at the meeting loved the idea.

During the early 1930's, Johnny Carson grew up in Avoca Iowa. At age 7 or 8, there was plenty for Johnny and his friends to do. Johnny and his friends would go fishing on East Nishnabotna River. They went to the circus each summer. Johnny saw fourth of July fireworks. Johnny went to the August County fair.
Johnny's father Homer Carson was a local manager for the Iowa Nebraska Electric Light and Power company.
The Carson's home in Avoca was at 725 Cherry Street. Johnny's mother Ruth Carson was a proper lady. The Carson family had roots in England and Ireland.
In October 1933, Homer Carson moved his family to Norfolk Nebraska. Johnny was 8 years old. Ruth Carson enrolled Johnny at Grand Elementary School. Johnny was shy. Deep down, he wanted to be in front of an audience. He wanted to be in control. Johnny had friends. He did not have a best friend. He never got that close to people.
Johnny loved magic. He became the Great Carsoni.

Midnight on the Potomac page 4

Midnight on the Potomac page 4 by ric gustafson

By the summer of 1864, Washington DC was vastly different than a generation earlier. The sleepy city was full of open air slave markets, swamps and only a handful of public buildings. But since 1860, the city had changed. Thousands had migrated to the city. Finding housing was a big problem. Entire families squeezed into rented rooms, stayed in tents or slept outside.
Women like Louisa May Alcott were working as nurses at Union hospitals. Women came to Washington DC to find work and to fight. Many women found work as clerks in the Treasury, Patent and the Government Printing Office. Women found work as dietiticians, cooks, laundresses and seamstresses. And when their day jobs were done, these women volunteered their time in churches and hospitals.
On April 16 1862, President Lincoln outlawed slavery in the District of Columbia. Since then, the vast majority of African Americans in the city were free blacks. More than 40,000 slaves made it to Washington DC.

October 1 1987 was a special taping of the Tonight Show. It was the show's 25th anniversary. When the hour and a half show was over, the anniversary party began. Johnny normally had the party at the Beverly Hills Hotel. For this year's party, Johnny's nephew Jeff Sotzing suggested the Queen Mary.
Johnny hated public affairs. He came to the party with his new wife Alexis Maas. As shy as he was, he tried to be the perfect host. After a drink or two, Johnny and Alexis walked into the Grand Salon for dinner. At Johnny's table was Ed McMahon, Freddy De Cordova Doc Severinsen and their wives.
After dinner and dessert, A play casino started. Johnny picked up a deck of cards and began doing card tricks for his guests.
Outside of the Queen Mary that night, things were not going well for NBC. General Electric had acquired NBC two years prior. Cameramen and technicians were walking a picket line. They were on strike against NBC.
Inside the Queen Mary on October 1 1987, Johnny Carson was still King of the Night.

In John's neighborhood was the Salvation Army's residence for the children of broken homes. John and three of his friends knew the private grounds well. It was a prime hangout for the 4 lads. John's Aunt Mimi always took John to their annual garden party.

At the age of 61, Johnny Carson was a creature of television. His career started in Omaha in 1949. The major networks dominance was now fading. Cable networks and VCR's were taking over.
" That is very sweet of you". Johnny hesitated. " Did you intentionally stand or were you thrown out of your seats?".
He did the monalogue jokes hardly waiting for the laughter to die down. From the audience reaction, Johnny knew if a joke worked or not.
" Thank you for being with us". Then the red light went off. Then Ed announced the sponsors. Then silent commercials played. Then Johnny sat down at his desk.
Johnny Carson and the Tonight Show brought in up to 17 percent of NBC's profits. The Tonight Show set was modest. Behind Ed and Johnny was a painted backdrop. In front of the backdrop was potted palms and plants.
Then the camera light came on again. It was show time.

Johnny Carson was standing behind a multicolored curtain.
" Live from Hollywood the Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson". " Here's Johnny".
Wearing a tuxedo, Johnny stepped out from behind the curtain. In Studio 1, 500 guests stood up. They clapped, screamed and whistled. Tonight's taping was special. It was the 25th Anniversary Special. Johnny stopped at a star marked on the studio floor. Johnny looked left. There was Doc Severinsen. Johnny looked right. There was Ed McMahon.
October 1 1987started out on a bad note. A major earthquake had occured in LA. But the show went on. Johnny glanced at the audience. He had done so over 5000 times. He had become a fixture of life. Tonight over 21 million people would be tuning in to watch Johnny.
Johnny Carson was the King of the Night.

Midnight on the Potomac page 3 by ric gustafson

By May 1864, President Abraham Lincoln was tired. His hands and feet were always cold. At 6 feet 4, Lincoln towered over most people. His health was not the best. He was a lousy sleeper. He was a light eater. At this time, Lincoln was very sad. The Wilderness and Spotsylvania battles had cost the Union 35,000 lives.
Physically, the war had changed Lincoln. He had huge ears and a large nose. He had a prominent jaw and a wide mouth. His hair now was coarse and unruly. His skin now had a withered and ancient look to it.
But it was the President's eyes that people noticed. Sometimes they were dark gray Sometimes blue. His eyes were remote and secretive.
When the war started, Lincoln was 52. By the summer of 1864, the slaughter was continuing.

God's Word: II Corinthians 5:7

God's Word: II Corinthians 5:7 by ric gustafson

God was tired of sin infesting the earth. It grieved him. He told Noah he planned to cleanse the earth with a worldwide flood. Then God commanded Noah to build an ark. Noah had never seen an ark or a flood. Noah was to build it.
As Noah and his sons built an ark, people passing by taunted them. According to Genesis 6, Noah did everything God commanded him to do.
Noah couldn't see what God was planning. But Noah believed God and did what he commanded. This is called faith. In Hebrews 11, Noah is in the Hall of Faith. Noah is a biblical hero. Noah lived by faith not by sight. The truth is God loves us more than anything else.

On a borrowed grey mare, Thomas Nelson Conrad crossed the Navy Yard Bridge. After evading the guards on the bridge, Conrad rode north on 11th Street. Then Conrad headed northwest on Virginia Avenue. Then Conrad stopped at 17th and D Street. Conrad stopped the mare at the entrance to the Van Ness Mansion.
Designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the mansion had a secret. The mansion was a hub in the Confederate spy network in Washington DC. It was a safe house for Confederate spies. The mansion was only 3 blocks from the White House and the War Department.
Conrad, in disguise, was able to get the information he needed from the nearby Union army camp. Then he quietly rode out of the nation's capitol.

God's Word: Romans 12:2

God's Word: Romans 12:2 by ric gustafson

By the time 9 generations came, God had enough of the human race. Mankind had become so wicked. Except for one man. That was Noah. Even though humanity fell apart, Noah chose the right path. He stood strong for God.
We want to fit in with others. We don't want to be different. Because we are followers of God, we are different. Romans 12:2 says be transformed by the renewing of your mind. God wants us to be moldable. God wants to shape us. How do we become moldable?. We need to read God's Word daily. We need to put our faith in God. We must trust that God knows what's best for us.
Why?. Because God loves us more than anything else.

The special received a George Foster Peabody award. It was up for an Emmy for outstanding children's program. It won the award.
Why did the special succeed when it should of failed?. Was it because of the beautiful music of Vince Guaraldi?. Was it the enchanting animation and art?. Was it the meaningful scenes?. Was it the Everyman Charlie Brown?. You decide.

Charley Brown and Linus arrive at a Christmas tree lot. In the lot are wonderful colorful trees. Charlie Brown spots a tiny sappling tree. It has only three branches with sparse needles. Charlie Brown is drawn to the small tree. Charlie Brown brings the little tree back. Then he is ridiculed and made fun of by the others. Frustrated, Charlie Brown says he does not know what Christmas is all about. Linus says he knows. For the next minute, Linus recites from the bible. When Charlie Brown cannot even get one ornament on the little tree. Charley Brown abandons it.
Linus walks over and puts his blanket around the base of the tree. The rest of the Peanuts gang put Snoopy's decorations on the small tree. Then it is transformed into a lush vibrant tree. They shout to Charley Brown ' Merry Christmas Charlie Brown'. Then they sing the final song. ' Hark The Herald Angels Sing'.
The next morning, Mendelson is at his favorite neighborhood coffee shop. He begins to wonder how did the special do the previous night?.
Later on, Mendelson got a call from CBS.

God's Word: Genesis 1:27

God's Word: Genesis 1:27 by ric gustafson

Sin changed the world for Cain and Abel. Abel took a stand for righteousness. Abel trusted his Creator. Cain did not. He killed his brother. Sin is deceitful. Anger and unkind thoughts can into something much worse. Abel's murder was a horrible act. Cain's deed was an attack on God's image.
All humans are created in God's image. Only people are created in God's image.
To be made in God's image means to be like God. Like God, we can speak, reason, love and show creativity. We are spiritual in nature. We represent God. Cain destroyed God's image bearer.

Jack Dallas knocked on Mr Kincaide's office door.
" Come in".
Jack entered the office. It was dark without lights or lamps.
" Sit down Jack". Jack's boss was wearing a black suit and pants. " You wanted to see me Jack".
Jack put a large stack of papers on Mr Kincaide's desk. " I have numerous complaints about your low wattage light bulbs".
Glen glanced at the complaint papers. " Like what?".
" People are getting hurt because they can't see".
" Jack, revenue interests me more than customer loyalty".
" You care more about profits than your customers".
" Of course". Glen grinned. " I always think about the bottom line".
There was a knock on the door.
" Come in".
The door opened. RJ Sullivan walked in. He squinted in the semi darkness. " Glen, I was standing outside your door". He frowned. " I heard everything you just said to Jack".
" Sir, you promoted me to start making a profit for this company".
Mr Sullivan walked over and picked up the pile of complaints.
" Glen, I built this company because of loyal customers not profits".
" Mr Sullivan, I can explain".
" Glen, you have one hour to pack up your things". Mr Sullivan's voice hesitated. " You're fired".
He bitterly left the office.
" Jack, I want you to run this office".
" Thank you Sir".
Mr Sullivan walked toward the door. " Make me proud Jack". He walked out.
Jack took a new light bulb and screwed it in the lamp on the desk. Light filled the dark room
Jack smiled. " John 8:12".

God's Word: Romans 5:12

God's Word: Romans 5:12 by ric gustafson

Eve gave birth to two sons. Their names were Cain and Abel. Both had a sin problem.  Cain and Abel had a sinful nature. Both had hearts that naturally opposed God. This separated them from God.
The rest of the story is that Cain gave in to his evil desires and killed his brother Abel. Abel loved God. God loved Abel's sacrifices. Abel had a loving heart for God. Cain did not.
We have a choice. We can be like Cain and ignore God. Or we can be like Abel and trust in God's plan of salvation. The choice is our's?. Which will you choose?.

Jack walked up to the receptionist's desk. He squinted at the dimness of the room.
" Good morning Myra".
" Morning Mr Dallas". She sighed as she tried to read a piece of paper. " It's so hard to read anything anymore".
" Because of the light bulbs".
" Yes". She squinted as she tried to read a memo. " Your company's light bulbs are too low in wattage".
" I know". He took a new light bulb out from his bag. " I have been getting complaints from my customers".
The phone rang. She picked it up. " Please tell your boss about the problems we are having".
" I will". Jack put the new light bulb into the lamp on her desk. Her desk area lit up.
She looked up from the phone. " Thank you Mr Dallas".

God's Word: Psalm 51

God's Word: Psalm 51 by ric gustafson

After the Garden of Eden, sin changed everything. Still, God blessed Adam and Eve with children. They had two sons. Their names were Abel and Cain. Psalm 51 talks about sacrifice. Cain was a farmer. Abel was a shepherd. Both brought sacrifices to God. God was pleased with Abel's sacrifice. God was not pleased with Cain's. Because of rage and jealousy, Cain killed Abel. He tried to hide his sin. Abel gave his best to God. Cain did not.

Mendelson entered a restaurant in San Francisco. The upscale eatery was called Original Joe's. There Mendelson met Vince Guaraldi. Mendelson immediately liked him. The jazz musician had long sideburns, black eyeglasses and a large mustache.

Mendelson asked Guaraldi if he was interested in working on a soundtrack for the documentary. The jazz musician said yes right away. He loved Peanuts and read it to his two young children.
About 2 weeks later, Guaraldi was also driving over the Golden Gate bridge. Inspiration hit him. Right away, he began composing a tune. When he was finished with it, he played it for Mendelson. The producer was enchanted by what he heard.

Adam and Eve lived in the Garden of Eden. It was paradise on earth. It was a perfect sinless home. Then Adam and Eve decided to rebel against God and eat the forbidden fruit. Instead of God, they chose their own way.
God could have destroyed us. Instead God chose a different path. God provided a path of salvation. God sent his perfect Son to die for our sins.
We are sinful rebels who need a Savior. God sent who we needed. Why?. Because God loves us more than anything else.

In late June early July 1965, Neil Reagan traveled to the home of Charles Schulz. Reagan was to attend a presentation by Schulz, Lee Mendelson and Bill Melendez. They walked Reagan through their story boards and a pencil test animation. They showed Reagan pencil sketches of the characters and scenes. Reagan's reaction to what was shown to him was negative. Reagan suggested that the 3 concentrate on the color and the music.
One day, Mendelson was driving south across the Golden Gate bridge. He was listening to radio station KSFO. On the AM station Mendelson was listening to a local jazz program. At one point, Mendelson was listening to a song that just captivated him. The song was ' Cast Your Fate to the Wind'.
Mendelson found out the jazz artist on the song was Vince Guaraldi. Mendelson called a friend Ralph Gleason. He wanted to find out if Gleason knew this Guaraldi. He did. Mendelson asked his friend to set up a meeting.

In the summer of 1965, Neil Reagan was a busy man. He supervised the LA office of McCann Erickson. He also helped his younger brother Ronald Reagan's political campaign. Ronald Reagan wanted to be Governor of California. The New York office of McCann Erickson asked Neil Reagan to fly to San Francisco and report back about the progress of their animated Christmas special.
Neil Reagan was the perfect choice for the assignment. He had an extensive background in entertainment. Reagan started out at KFWB radio station owned by the Warner Brothers movie studio. Then Reagan became a Director at CBS. Then Neil Reagan was recruited by the LA manager of McCann Erickson. His name was Clarence Olmstead. When Olmstead retired, Neil Reagan took over.
Neil Reagan wanted the assignment for two reasons. First, he loved children. Second, he loved the Christmas holiday.

Shortly after the war, John Lennon's mother Julia had found a new man. His name was John Dykins. Not far away in the Dingle, Johnny and Annie Starkey were taking care of their grandson. His name was Richy. Annie noticed right away her grandson was left handed. Richy started school at St Silas. Because Elsie's husband left her and Richy, the two of them had to move to 10 Admiral Grove.
Paul McCartney at age 3 had a steady home life. Paul's father Jim was quiet and mild mannered. Paul's mother Mary was also quiet.
George Harrison had a strong family. His father Harry was a bus driver. The family lived at Arnold Grove. Photos of George showed a blond haired boy with his father's smile. John Lennon started school on November 12 1945. The school was Mosspits Lane Primary School. It was not far from Newcastle Road. Julia worked at the nearby Coffee House. In his nursery class, John enjoyed reading, writing, painting and drawing. In March 1946, Julia and John moved in with Bobby Dykins. Eventually, John moved in to the house on Menlove Avenue with his Aunt Mimi and his Uncle George. In May 1946, John switched schools to Dovedale Road infant school.

My name is Cleopatra. You can dislike me, love me or hate me. I was born a girl and a goddess. I will be a future queen. I have enemies. Including members of my own family.
But I am not entirely alone. Charmian is with me. She has been my slave and my servant since I was born. She tends to me. We are inseperable. When I began to speak, I chose her name. Charmian means giver of joy. She is my slave. She does not want to be free. We are chained by love.
I belong to her also.

Psalm 4 says when I call answer me O my just God you who relieve me when I am in distress have pity on me and hear my prayer. Has God's face shined down on you?.
Know that the Lord does wonders for his faithful one the Lord will hear me when I call upon him. Is our heart filled with calm?.
O Lord let the light of your countenance shine upon us you put gladness into my heart. When things close in on us do we panic?.
As soon as I lie down I fall peacefully asleep for you alone O Lord bring security to my dwelling. Jesus kept calm in the worst situations. Can we?.

God's Word: Isaiah 43: 6-7 by ric gustafson

Why did God create you?. What's your purpose in life?. The truth is God created you to worship him. We will start to shift from our selfish desires and put it on God. Life is about God. We live to worship God. Worship is giving God the glory he deserves. We should glorify God in everything we do.
How do we worship God?. We pray, read God's Word, help and tell others about God.

Director Bill Melendez answered the phone.
Producer Lee Mendelson was on the line. " Bill, can we do an animated half hour in 6 months?".
" Of course" replied Melendez.
Melendez had met Schultz when he had directed some Ford Motor Company commercials.
The three men got together at Schultz's studio. They looked at the one page outline Coca Cola had received. Elements in the outline included a winter scene with ice skating. There was a Christmas play, There was a scene with a biblical element. And there was a mixture of jazz and holiday music.
Mendelson suggested a Christmas tree could be added to the script. The musical soundtrack was also discussed. Guaraldi's piece ' Linus and Lucy' would be included in a scene.
The one element Schultz would not budge was the scene where Linus recites from the book of Luke. Lastly, a budget for the special was set.

Jack squinted his eyes in the semi darkness. " Thank you".
" You have been the top salesman here for five years now". He looked up from the file. " What's your secret?".
Jack smiled. " Mr Kincaide, my work and my life is based on John 8:12".
" Sorry, the bible doesn't mean anything to me".
" John 8:12 says I am the light of the world".
Mr Kincaide gave Jack a strange look. " What does that mean?".
" He who follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life".
" I'm not sure what that means".
" Is there something you wanted to talk about Mr Kincaide?".
" Jack". Mr Kincaide stared at his employee. " I would like to try lower wattage light bulbs".
" Lower wattage?".
" The lower the wattage". Mr Kincaide smiled. " People will want to buy more light bulbs".
Jack frowned. " Sounds deceitful to me Sir".
" We're here to make money Jack".

Sometimes Paul would go over to John's house. Paul knew a short cut to get there. Paul would walk across the Allerton Municipal Golf Course. From there, Paul would walk onto a bank above Menlove Avenue. This was opposite of John's house. Usually John and Paul would walk everywhere carrying their guitars without the case.
Previous owners had called John's home Mendips. It was a semi detached suburban villa. John's Aunt Mimi ran the home. She let John and Paul use the porch to play their guitars and try to write songs. On that porch, 20 songs came into being. The best of those early Lennon McCartney songs was ' Love ME Do".
To Paul. John's upbringing was middle class. Paul was impressed that John was a poet, a songwriter and a guitar player. John was impressed by Paul's talent and his burning ambition.

At the time in 1965 that Schultz and Mendelson were asked to put together a Christmas Special, Schultz and Peanuts were on top of the world. Peanuts was reaching 60 million people. The strip was being published in 771 newspapers. It was translated into a dozen languages. The comic strip was on the cover of Time Magazine on April 9 1965. But even with all the success including two years as Cartoonist of the Year. Schultz was struggling in his personal life. He suffered from symptoms of anxiety and depression. He lost weight and had constant stomach problems.
At the same time, Mendelson had submitted a one page outline to Coca Cola's headquarters in Atlanta. Nervously, Mendelson had to wait 3 weeks for an answer from John Allen. Coca Cola bought the special. That was the good news. The bad news was that they only had 6 months to make the special. Mendelson needed a Director who could do the impossible.
In Mendelson's mind, there was only one Director who could pull it off.
Mendelson picked up the phone.

Jack yawned as he turned off his computer. He picked up his purple workout bag from underneath his cubicle. The overhead light above his desk flickered. He had done all of his light bulb visits earlier in the day. He was ready to leave. He stood up and put his bag over his right shoulder. As he reached the entrance of his cubicle, somebody walked into the entrance.
" Sorry to bother you Jack". Roger Francis grinned. " Mr Kincaide would like to see you for a few minutes before you leave".
" Ok". Jack walked out of his cubicle. He began to walk down a dimly lit hallway. He looked up. The overhead light was flickering. He stopped in front of a door that said ' Glen Kincaide'. Jack knocked.
" Come in".
Jack opened the door to reveal a dimly lit office. The only light in the scantly furnished office was a small lamp on a big wooden desk.
Wearing a dark suit, a small serious looking man walked over to Jack. He shook Jack's hand. " I'm Glen Kincaide'.
Jack shook his hand. " Jack Dallas".
" Please Jack". He gave Jack a strange smile. " Please have a seat".

On May 5 1965, Lee Mendelson finally got the phone call he had been waiting for. He quickly dialed Charles Schultz. " I think I just sold your Charlie Brown Christmas Special".
" Who called?".
" John Allen of McCann Erickson". His voice hesitated. " He asked if you and I would like to make a Christmas Special for December this year".
" What did you tell him?".
" I did not hesitate". His voice hesitated. " I told him yes".
The next morning, Mendelson made the drive to Sonoma County which was north of San Francisco. Mendelson found Schultz and his wife Joyce on a 28 acre property. In order to talk, Schultz stopped his daily writing of panels of his strip. Both men sat down.
Schultz began telling Mendelson story scenes, themes and ideas. Schultz wanted the special to deal with the true meaning of Christmas. Schultz wanted a Christmas play to be part of the story. Schultz wanted Jazz music for the special. Schultz loved a local San Francisco Jazz composer. His name was Vince Guaraldi.

Psalm 3 says O Lord how many are my adversaries many rise up against me many are saying of me there is no salvation for him in God. Are there storm clouds and hard times in your life?.
But you O Lord are my shield my glory you lift up my head when I call out to the Lord he answers me from his holy mountain. Did Jesus think of this psalm in the Garden of Gethsemane?.
When I lie down in sleep I wake again for the Lord sustains me I fear not the myriads of people arrayed against me on every side rise up O Lord save me my God.
Think of Jesus in the garden and in a dungeon later that night praying Psalm 3

In Feb 1965, James Aubrey had a long talk with Frank Stanton. Stanton was the president of CBS. After talking, it was decided that Aubrey and CBS would part ways. Aubrey had a talk with the Chairman of CBS Bill Paley. Despite a plea, Aubrey and CBS parted ways.
Now with Aubrey gone, CBS could now broadcast specials. A holiday special that Coca Cola was going to sponsor was ' Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. Because of production delays, the special could not be broadcast until March of 1966. Coca Cola now run by J Paul Austin wanted a holiday special for Thanksgiving Christmas 1965.
One day, a McCann Erickson executive named John Allen noticed a Time Magazine cover about Peanuts and Charles Schultz. The date of the Time Magazine cover was April 9 1965. Allen had seen the documentary about Schultz and Peanuts. Allen knew that Lee Mendelson produced the documentary.
Could Mendelson and Schultz pull off a Christmas special in a short period of time?.

Sept 10 2001

Captain John Ogonowski walked in the door of his farm house in Dracut Massachusetts.
" Dad, please help me with my math".
The 50 year old pilot gave a tired smile to his 16 year old daughter and his wife Peg. John was tired. He had just driven to their 130 acre farm 30 miles north of Boston. He had just piloted American Airlines Flight 11 from LA. After 23 years as a commercial pilot, he was tired. He enjoyed coming to his farm to rest.
After dinner of chicken cutlets and ice cream, John wanted to try and get someone to cover his six hour shift for the next morning. His shift the next morning Sept 11 was a 6 hour return trip to California. There were things he needed to do on his farm.
John went to the TV room. He turned on the desktop computer. He logged into the American Airlines scheduling system. But it was to no avail. John  had to do the shift. He was going to be again the Captain of American Airlines Flight 11. The flight was nonstop from Boston to LA.

Jack talked through the door. " I'm a light bulb salesman". Jack's voice hesitated. " I noticed your house was totally dark".
" Get off my property".
" If you could give me five minutes". Jack listened for a response. " I would love to show you what's in my bag".
The door opened slightly. " Come in".
Jack slowly walked in. The house was completely dark.
" What's in your bag?".
" Light bulbs". Jack took one out of his bag. " May I put one in one of your lamps?".
" No". A voice shrieked. " I like it dark in here".
Jack quietly walked up to a lamp. He put a new bulb in. A bright light came on. He noticed someone crumpled against a wall.
" Take it back out".
Jack put a new bulb into another lamp. More light came on.
" Take it out". Then the shrieking stopped.
Jack ran over to a young man crumpled next to a wall.
He was crying. " Help me".
Jack showed the young man John 8:12. " I am the light of the world".

When John and Paul would get together in the afternoon to write music, they would have a routine. John would leave the Liverpool College of Art. Paul would leave the Liverpool Institute. From Catharine Street they would get on a green double decker bus number 86. They would then go down Upper Parliament Street past Sefton General Hospital. Then they would take the roundabout at Penny Lane to Allerton. Paul's house was at 20 Forthlin Road. Paul's house in the afternoon was quiet and empty. Paul's father was at work.
John and Paul would sit in the front parlor by the fireplace. They would sit opposite of each other. Starting with 3 chords of Buddy Holly, they would attempt a song. Another influence on the lads were the Everly Brothers. The first 3 Lennon McCartney songs they attempted were ' Too Bad About Sorrows' ' Just Fun' ' Because I Know You Love Me So'.
There was no competition between the two. John always came first.

As he was leaving the area, he noticed one home that was completely dark. He picked up his bag and walked up to the front door. He took out a small black bible. He rang the doorbell. Jack opened the bible to John 8:12. ' I am the light of the world'. Nobody opened the door. Jack rang the doorbell 2 more times. No answer. Frustrated, Jack picked up his bag. He began to walk toward his car.
" What do you want?".
Smiling, Jack turned. He began walking back toward the front door..

Both John and Paul loved American rock and roll music. Both of them loved hearing it and playing it. They knew nothing about rock and roll music two years prior. They made up for lost time.
Both John and Paul loved a singer from Macon Georgia. His name was Little Richard. Paul did a great imitation of the singer. John and Paul also loved Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran and Jerry Lee Lewis. But there was one person both lads worshiped. That was Elvis Presley.
A group called the Crickets were led by leader Buddy Holly. Holly was a big influence on John and Paul. The Crickets introduced John and Paul to the group sound. The sound of vocal, electric guitar, bass and drums.
Buddy Holly and the Crickets encouraged skiffle groups to change to rock and roll. In honor of Holly and the Crickets, John and Paul began writing songs to the Cricket sound.

The success of the Dec 6 1964 stop motion Christmas special ' Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer' gave Coca Cola's advertising agency McCann Erickson an idea. Coca Cola wanted to do their own Christmas TV Special. To the CEO of McCann Erickson, this was going to be a huge challenge.
To find a network willing to broadcast an animated Christmas special by December 1965. That challenge fell on the shoulders of Marion Harper Jr.
In August of 1955, McCann Erickson secured their largest account. It was Coca Cola. Led by Marion Harper Jr, the agency secured the 15 million dollar deal. To an Oklahoma City boy raised by his mother, life could not be better. Neal Gilliatt was chosen to oversee the Coca Cola account.
Gilliatt knew Harper Jr and McCann Erickson were hoping to make an animated TV special for December 1965. NBC already had plans to show Rudolph again. That left only ABC and CBS. The head of CBS's programming was James T Aubrey. Aubrey already had a policy against broadcasting specials. Marion Harper Jr knew he had a rough road ahead.

Psalm 2 says why do the nations rage and the peoples utter folly the kings of the earth rise up and the princes conspire together against the Lord and against his anointed let us break their fetters and cast their bonds from us. Do we put our trust in the Lord?.
He who is throned in heaven laughs the Lord drides them then in anger he speaks to them he terrifies them in his wrath I myself have set up my king on Zion my holy mountain. Is Jesus the King of Kings and God's true Son?.
I will proclaim the decree of the Lord the Lord said to me you are my  son this day I have begotten you ask of me and I will give you the nations for an inheritance and the ends of the earth for your possession You shall rule them with an iron rod you shall shatter them like an earthen dish.
How can we best serve Jesus today?.

Psalms: Psalm 1

Psalms: Psalm 1 by ric gustafson

The psalmist starts Psalm 1 with happy the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked nor walks in the way of sinners nor sits in the company of the insolent but delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on his law day and night. According to Matthew 12:33, what did Jesus mean by a tree is known by it's fruit?.
He is like a tree planted near running water that yields its fruit in due season and whose leaves never fade whatever he does prospers. According to Luke 3:9, what did Jesus mean by every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire?.
Not so the wicked not so they are like chaff which the wind drives away for the Lord watches over the way of the just but the way of the wicked vanishes.
What kind of fruit is your life bearing?. How can your life become more fruitful?.

God wants us to commit to living our life for him. God wants to lead us on a steady path. Psalm 143 says may your good Spirit lead me on level ground. What is a level path?. First, God gives us the right desires. Then God will advise us, instruct us and watch over us. Anything that causes us to have wrong desires or wrong doors will be taken out by God.
God wants us to freely worship him and to serve him. Why?. Because he loves us more than anything else.

Jim McCartney was not sure about the boy hanging around his son Paul. They came home in the afternoon until 5. Paul's father noticed smoke and dirty dishes. By five, the two had written a new song. Jim warned his son that his new friend would get him in trouble.
In 1956-57, John Lennon was 16 years old. He started a skiffle group called the Quarry Men. Lennon was the front man. In truth, Lennon wanted his group to be more rock than skiffle. When he turned 17, Lennon asked Paul to join his group.
Paul knew that John was two years older than he was. To Paul, John was a grownup Teddy Boy. He smoked. swore and went to college. John had Elvis Presley sideburns, an upturned collar and hunched shoulders. John was funny, abrasive and sometimes rude. He was literate and creative.
John had a huge impact on Paul. In 1957, Paul got a guitar. He was hooked. Paul was the oldest of two brothers. Paul was a storyteller, a mimic and a cartoonist. John and Paul realized early on they had the same interests. They enjoyed the same books and television shows. ' The Goon Show' consumed them.
They became fast friends.

Producer Lee Mendelson, with the approval of Charles Schulz, developed a documentary about Schultz and Peanuts. Lee took it to all of the networks including NBC. Nobody wanted it. In Atlanta Georgia, J Paul Austin was walking into the lobby of the Coca Cola headquarters. Austin was the President of the company. He was born on Feb 14 1915. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1940. Austin became President of Coca Cola in 1962.
In 1964, Austin joined the Board of Directors of General Electric. General Electric was producing a stop motion animation program for Dec 1964. GE's holiday special was based on a Montgomery Ward booklet called ' Rudolf The Red Nosed Reindeer'. The special was broadcast December 6 1964. The holiday special became an instant hit. So who was the producer that Charles Schulz put all of his trust in for his TV special?.

Leland Maurice Mendelson was born in San Francisco on March 24 1933. He was the only child of Palmer and Jeanette Mendelson. As a boy, Lee, as everyone called him, loved comic strips and radio programs. Lee graduated from San Mateo High School. Then he began attending Stanford University. He studied English Literature. Then Lee was drafted and served three years in the Air Force.
After the Air Force, Lee wanted to get into the new field of television. Lee got a job with a local CBS affiliate KPIX-TV. His job was that of a production assistant. After a while, Lee wanted to do longer format documentaries.
Frustrated at the station he was at, Lee left and started his own office. He became an independent producer. He produced an hour long documentary about pitcher Willie Mays. NBC bought the documentary. Then Lee wondered what his next documentary was going to be about. Then a thought came. He had always loved Charles Schulz and Peanuts. He picked up the phone.

The Israelites had been taken into captivity. It had taken a long time for the return and the restoration of Jerusalem. Some people had waited for this return their entire lives. What does God have for you right now?. This is the day the Lord has made. It might be routine. A routine day with a good attitude could prepare you for new things God has in store for you.
The fact is you will not be promoted if you're not doing your best where God has you right now.
The fact is God loves you and me more than anything else in the world.

Psalms: Psalm 112:4

Psalms: Psalm 112:4 by ric gustafson

At times, life can seem dark. We all have problems at times that seem insurmountable. In times of difficulty, God is present. Psalm 112 says when darkness overtakes him, light will come bursting in.
God is most visible in our storms and difficulties. When it's dark and seems as if there is no way out, God's light comes forth.
God promises that his light will come out. God's light will be favor, strength and healing. God will propel us forward not backwards. Why?. Because God loves us more than anything else.

Psalms: Psalm 109: 21

Psalms: Psalm 109:21 by ric gustafson

When people use false accusations against you, God says take a seat. Stay in peace. Imagine that God has prepared a feast. God has a seat for you. God is going to honor and favor you. Those who disrespected you and tried to push you down, will not be promoted and honored.
God wants us to guard our heart. To not get offended. God says don't get into battles that don't matter.
Why?. Because God loves us more than anything else.

Proverbs: Proverbs 22:1

Proverbs: Proverbs 22:1 by ric gustafson

Our reputation is very valuable. It can come with great riches. It can be despised. You can be looked down and seen as shady. God wants us to be people of integrity. Proverbs 22 says a good name is more desirable than great riches. To God, your name is very important. Integrity will take us farther than dishonesty. God loves and respects a man of integrity. Why?. Because God loves us more than anything else.

Mini Devotions: Hebrews 11:1

Mini Devotions: Hebrews 11:1 by ric gustafson

What determines our relationship with God?. It is faith. How we deal with God?. How we see God?. Because of faith, we hold the truth in God's Word. God gives us his holy fire. Faith rests it's weight on his Word. In faith, we look to God. We trust his promises. In faith, we believe God and trust in his Word.
