The first licensed pizzeria in the US was Lombardi's in NYC in 1905. Pizza's popularity grew after WWII because of soldiers returning home from Italy. The first pizza franchise was in 1954 in Sacramento California by Sherwood ' Shakey' Johnson. Chuck E Cheese started in San Jose California in 1977. New York style pizza with a dry low moisture mozzarella had a thin pliable crust and was made in a coal fired oven. NYC pizza parlors have their own styles. These include Joe's, Grimaldi's, Roberta's, Prince Street, DiFara, Tony's, Emmy Squared, Lindustrie, Juliana's, Emily, Archie's, Patsy's, Best Pizza, Lucali's, Forcella, Paulie Gee's and the Crocodile Lounge.
