In the 5th Century BC, soldiers under Darius the Great baked bread covered with cheese and dates on their shields. In the year 997, the word pizza appeared in Latin from an Italian town called Gaeta. Tomatoes for pizza arrived in Europe in the 16th century. Tomatoes were not widely accepted for two more centuries. In 1694, the first Italian cookbook included tomato sauce. In 1889, Margherita pizza was named after Margherita of Savoy. In 1830, Naples Italy was credited as the home of modern pizza. The first pizzeria in Naples was Antica Pizzeria Port Alba. They served wood fired pizza. They served Pizza a Portafoglio which was simple pizza folded like a wallet.
By the 1900's, pizza was coming to the US.
