Wallenberg page 9

Wallenberg page 9 by ric Gustafson

In early December 1944, Wallenberg wrote to his mother. He did not tell her that he was being targeted by the Arrow Cross. They were breaking into Swedish Embassy buildings and arresting people. With the Soviets near the Majestic Hotel, Eichmann fled the city. There were only two hundred Jews hiding at Wallenberg's headquarters. The Arrow Cross was killing Jews wherever they could find them.
On January 6 1945, Wallenberg knew the end was near. The Soviet army had enclosed Budapest. Wallenberg looked tired and pale. The next day, he began to fear for his own life. The Arrow Cross were murdering people all over Budapest. On January 17, Wallenberg knew what he had to do. He told his staff that he was going to visit the Soviet army headquarters. He left with two Red army soldiers. He was never seen again. What happened to him is a mystery to this day.
When the Soviets totally liberated Budapest, only 124,000 Jews were left. It is said that 100,000 of those Jews were saved by Raoul Wallenberg.
