Oskar Schindler was born in the Sudetenland in 1908. He applied for Nazi Party membership on Feb 10 1939. Before that, he was briefly jailed for a being a spy for the Czechs. In Krakow Poland, he took over an enamelware plant at 4 Lipowa Street. He renamed the plant Deutsche Enamelware Fabrik. He began producing pots, pans and mess kits for the German army. In March 1941, the Nazi governor of the Krakow District Hans Frank established the Krakow Ghetto. By the end of 1942, Schindler was employing 370 Jewish workers. Word was spreading that his factory was a safe haven.
