Johnny Carson enlisted in the Navy in 1943. Instead the navy shipped him to Columbia University for naval officer's training. From there, he took classes at Millsaps College in Jackson Mississippi.
On Aug 6 1945, Johnny was on his way to the USS Pennsylvania. On that day in 1945, an atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. On Aug 9 1945, a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki.
By the time Johnny reached his ship, it had already suffered a torpedo. Johnny returned to the states on the USS Pennsylvania.
In the fall of 1946, Johnny entered the University of Nebraska. Johnny entered using the GI Bill. Johnny and some Norfolk Nebraska friends rented a two men apartment close to the campus. Johnny pledged the PHI Gamma Delta fraternity.
Johnny decided to major in radio and specch.
