Bethsaida page 2 by ric gustafson
The mound of Bethsaida is north of the Sea of Galilee. The oval shaped mound is an extension of a lava flow. This lava flow formed the Golan Heights. The mound is 400 meters long by 200 meters wide. It is 45 meters above the Sea of Galilee.
The mound is divided into two. There is a lower city which is most of the site. Then there is an upper city at the northeastern edge of the mound. Only at the upper city has an excavation been started. At the eastern edge of the mound, it descends into a short ravine. The southern and western edge of the mound slope to the Bethsaida plain.
Access to the mound is easiest from the north. The Jordan River is only 250 meters from the mound. Two springs from the nearby foothills provided water to the mound.
