John started at Quarry Banks High School for Boys on Sept 4 1952. Opened in 1922, the school had a good reputation for sending boys to Oxford and Cambridge. John quickly formed a group of friends to be around him.
When an army officer came to the school to give a lecture, John was scared. Richy Starkey was also worried. Both boys were born in 1940. Both knew about the National Service. Both knew that call up papers would arrive shortly after their 18th birthday.
On Sep 9 1953, Paul started at the Liverpool Institute High School for Boys. Paul's mother had hoped he would become a doctor. Paul's father Jim had hoped his son would become a scientist.
At school, Paul was popular. He was naturally funny and enjoyed drawing cartoons. Paul became friends with Ivan Vaughan. He was a friend of John's. Paul liked the location of the school. The school was just off of Hope Street. Nearby was the artistic quarter called Canning Street. Paul enjoyed walking down to the St John's Market.
George Harrison was able to get into the Liverpool Institute in Feb 1954.
