" Paul told me". Luke bit into a grape. " That he is to be executed at sunrise on the summer solstice".
Aquila frowned. " Is there anything we can do?".
" We will pray for him" Priscilla exclaimed. " He would want us to do that".
" His faith is strong". Luke bit into another grape. " Bur his physical body is shattered".
" I was concerned about the prison he was in".
" He knows his work here is coming to an end".
Luke sighed. " He has been serving Christ for a long time".
Aquila looked at Luke. " Did you talk to Paul on our behalf?".
" He said to discern among yourselves what to do".
" That is what we will do". Aquila grinned. " We will pray and wait upon the Lord for direction".

Paul frowned. " I stood before Nero alone".
" I know". He helped the old man into a new tunic. " I heard you burned down half of Rome".
Paul frowned again. " Only Onesiphorus visited me during the trial".
" I am here now". He took some scissors and began to trim Paul's beard.
" Thank you Luke". The old man braced himself against a stone wall. " I am grateful".
" I bring you greetings from Aquila and Priscilla".
Paul sighed. " How are they?".
" They face the hard decision of fleeing the city or staying".
" How is Linus?".
" They have lost all contact with him". Luke stared at the old man. " They request your counsel".
" What wisdom can I give them?". Paul sighed. " Everything I have done, I have done for Christ".

Luke rapped on the door. A burly guard opened it. Luke smiled. It was Eubulus who had brought him safely to Aquila and Priscilla.
The guard led him down a hallway. He stopped in front of a hole carved into a stone floor. " The one you seek is down there".
Luke was lowered by a rope into the dungeon darkness.
Eubulus pulled up the rope. " I will pull you back up before the night watch ends".
Luke held his nose. The stench was horrible.
A tired voice came from the darkness. " Luke, is that you?".
" Yes, my friend".
A bearded old man emerged from the darkness. " I am surprised you made it down here safely".
" The only reason I made it here". Luke grinned. " Is because the guard upstairs is a believer".
" Luke, I am a worn out old man".
Luke exclaimed. " So tell me how you got here?".

" Wake up prisoner".
Paul opened his eyes. He stared at the light above the stone chamber.
" You are wanted outside". A rope was lowered. He was lifted out of the cell opening. He squinted in the light of the upper chamber. There were two Praetorians standing in front of him.
" You are Paul of Tarsus?".
Paul squinted his eyes. " I am".
" I am Prefect Mauritius Gallis". He grinned. " I am in charge of you now". He handed a parchment to the man next to him. " Severus, read this to the prisoner".
" Nero Caesar has proclaimed Paul of Tarsus a corrupter and a deceiver". His voice hesitated. " He will be beheaded at sunrise on the morning of the summer solstice".
" Where will I die?".
The Prefect smiled. " Right here of course".

Luke took a bite of the stew Priscilla had put into his bowl.
" What has happened to Linus?".
" We do not know". Aquila frowned. " We lost contact with him weeks ago".
" After the awful fires here". Priscilla bit into a fig. " The believers here aren't sure what to do".
" Perhaps Paul can help". Aquila looked at his friend. " Are you going to go see him?".
" At the prison". He frowned. " Yes I am".
" Perhaps he can give us some insight on the situation here".
Luke smiled. " I will ask him for his counsel".
" Thank you Luke". Priscilla grinned. " Now please eat".
Luke grinned as he ate more of the stew.

Luke walked up to the Servian Wall. He  was to meet a man there. Soon, a member of the Praetorian Guard walked up. " Grace be with you".
Luke grinned. " And also to you".
He pointed. " Come, I will take you to them". He led Luke down windy streets and past tall wooden buildings. They began to walk down the Way of the Triumph. Luke was led to a nice looking villa on a hillside. Then he was led into a courtyard garden. Standing there, was a man and a woman. When they saw Luke, they ran over and embraced him.
Aquila smiled. " Luke, my friend".
Priscilla grinned. " We've missed you Luke".
Luke gave them a bag of coins. " Here is a collection from the Philippian church".
Aquila looked at the soldier. " Thank you Eubulus for safely bringing our friend".
" My pleasure". He quickly left.

John was tired.
Polycarp stared at him. " Master, you should sleep".
John weakly smiled. " I have one more favor to ask of you".
" Anything Master". He grinned. " You know that".
" I would like you to be the new bishop of the church in Smyrna".
" Me?" he exclaimed in a loud voice. " Why me?".
" It has already been decided". He smiled. " Will you accept?".
Polycarp smiled. " Of course Master".
" I have one more thing for you to write for me".
Then Polycarp wrote down what became First, Second and Third John.
Less than a month later, John died.

The End.

After a good night's sleep, John ate breakfast alone.
Polycarp walked into the room. " Morning Master".
" Morning Polycarp". He grinned. " Were you able to read the pages I wrote?".
" I did Master". His voice hesitated. " I was fascinated at what I read".
" What do you think I should do with the pages?".
" I think you should show the pages to the church here in Ephesus".
" And then?".
" I would send a copy to the other churches".
At the next Lord's Day, Polycarp greeted the Ephesus home church. Later, John stood up and told them the story of his time in Patmos. Then he read to them his admonition to the churches. Then Polycarp read to them the rest of John's revelation. When it was over around midnight, John told the congregation that those who have an ear, let them hear.
Then, those in attendance were on the floor praying to God in prayer.
John went back to his room.

Grace: Isaiah 30: 15

Grace: Isaiah 30: 15 by ric gustafson

God wants us to have continual conversation with him. We want God to be present in us. We want to know God's will for us. We need to pray for God's grace in perfect confidence. When we ask for God's grace, he will never fail us. We can doubt God's grace. The truth is God always gives us grace. He wants to because he loves us more than anything else. Praise God.

Fall A D 96

Because of the assassination of Caesar Augustus Domitian, John was returning home from Patmos. Because of old age and the hard labor of Patmos, John's health was failing. He was looking forward to returning home to Ephesus. In his hand was a leather bag. Inside was papyrus with his writing on it. He was eager to show it to Polycarp.
His young disciple was waiting for him at the dock.
John slowly hobbled off the boat.
" Welcome back Master".
They embraced.
" Let me take your bag".
" How did you know I was coming today?".
" The church knew you were coming back". The young man smiled. " We just weren't sure which day it would be".
" Are my quarters ready?".
" It is".
" Good". John weakly grinned. " I have a great mystery to tell you".

Grace: Ephesians 3: 16-17

Grace: Ephesians 3: 16-17 by ric gustafson

In opposition to each other is faith and fear. Fear erodes our faith in God. God does not want worry to be part of our life. So how can we overcome worry?. When worries and trials come our way and they will. God wants our trials to bring us closer to him. We cannot deny our fears. We need to bring them to God. We need to leave them with him.

John's thigh was sore from a cramp. Then he felt lightheaded. He stared at the dark cave around him. Then he heard a loud voice behind him. He turned around. He smiled. It was Jesus.
" I am the Alpha and the Omega". The voice hesitated. " The First and the Last".
In front of John were seven golden lampstands. The one in the middle looked like the Son of Man. John fell to his knees.
" Do not be afraid". The voice continued. " Write down the things that I show you".
Jesus showed John all the wonders of heaven and the future.
John fell asleep.
A guard woke him up. " We thought you were dead".
John ate and then wrote down everything Jesus showed him.
He was instructed by Jesus to send the writing to seven different churches.

Grace: Proverbs 3: 13-14

Grace: Proverbs 3: 13-14 by ric gustafson

How wise are you?. Proverbs 3 declares that blessed is the man who finds wisdom. Solomon writes that her ways are pleasant ways. That all her paths are peace. Our life is not always pleasant. Our path is not always peaceful. Jesus's life was not always peaceful. Does my life create peace or chaos?. With God's grace, we can have peace and the gift of wisdom.

" This story continues".
Polycarp kept writing. " Ok Master".
" Eight days later,  we were in that upper room again".
" Was Thomas there?".
" Yes he was". John grinned. " Then guess what happened?".
The young man smiled. " Jesus came again".
" Yes, he did".
" Did Thomas doubt again?".
" No". John's voice hesitated. " He exclaimed to Jesus my Lord and my God".
" Did Jesus leave?".
" Yes". He grinned at the young man. " Then later we encountered him at the Sea of Tiberias".
" Why were you there?".
" To fish". He smiled. " Polycarp, I think that's the last story I want to tell".
The young man put down his pen. " Ok Master".

" All of a sudden, Jesus was in our midst".
" What did he say?".
" Peace be with you".
" I'm sure all of you were overjoyed".
" He showed us his hands and his side".
" Were you dreaming?".
" I was at a loss to describe my joy".

" He proclaimed to us". John smiled. " As the Father has sent me, I also send you".

" Something incredible happened while I was eating breakfast that Sunday morning".
Polycarp raised his pen. " What happened?".
" Mary ran back  and told us the stone over the tomb had been moved".
" Aren't there supposed to be guards watching over that?".
" Peter and I ran to the tomb to witness it ourselves".
" What did you see?".
" I personally saw his burial linen cloths lying there". John smiled. " I then believed what Jesus had told us what he was going to do".
" Then what did you do?".
" Peter and I ran back and told Jesus's mother and the others".
" I'm sure they were overjoyed".
" Mary was overcome with joy because she got to speak to Jesus".
" That's incredible".
" Yes". John grinned. " All of us were elated beyond belief".

" Ready Polycarp?".
The young man raised his pen. " Ready".
Tears began to appear on John's face. " I also ran away during the worst of it".
" That must of been painful emotionally".
" When Jesus was carrying his cross". His tired voice hesitated. " Only then did I accompany his mother to Golgotha".
" That must of been hard".
" I stood next to her watching the pain on her face".
" I'm glad you were there to comfort her".
John grinned. " Then something amazing happened".
" What happened?".
" He looked right at me". His voice hesitated. " Then he said Son behold your mother".
" So what did you do?".
" I took care of her until the day she died".

Grace: I Corinthians 2:14

Grace: I Corinthians 2:14 by ric gustafson

When we have the Holy Ghost in us, we have a new spiritual vision. Our soul perceives divine things. The things of God become real to us. The person of Christ and the sweetness of the Holy Spirit become alive in us. When we do not have Jesus, we become spiritually discerned. God loves us more than anything else. Praise God.

" Polycarp, did you know that Jesus raised people from the dead?".
" Like who?".
" One was a dear friend of his named Lazarus".
" Was he from Bethany?".
" Yes". John smiled. " He lived there with his two sisters".
" What happened?".
" We arrived with Jesus". His voice hesitated. " But it was too late".
" Too late?".
" He had already been in the tomb for four days".
" Then what happened?".
" Jesus told his sister Martha that her brother would rise again".
" What did Martha say?".
" She knew that he would rise again in the resurrection of the last day". John's voice hesitated. " Then he said something incredible".
" What was that?".
" Jesus proclaimed that he was the resurrection and the life".
Polycarp smiled. " How did he prove that?".
" He raised Lazarus from the dead".

Grace: I Thessalonians 5:15

Grace: I Thessalonians 5:15 by ric gustafson

Being kind to others is not easy. Our flesh tells us to just think of ourselves. But that is not how God thinks. I Thessalonians 5:15 wants us to think a different way. This passage tells us to try and be kind to each other and to everyone else. God wants us to be kind to others. God wants us to sow the seeds of peace. If we do that, who knows the good things that could happen. Praise God.
