Irena Stanislawa Krzyzanowska was born on Feb 15 1910. She was born at a Catholic hospital in Warsaw Poland. Her father Stanislaw Henryk Krzyzanowski was a doctor in infectious diseases. Her mother Janina was a young woman without a profession. Stanislaw was a member of the Polish Socialist Party. He graduated from medical school in Kharkov Ukraine. The family moved back to Poland and he began to treat Jews and non Jews equally. Irena began to play with Jewish children and learn Yiddish. Irena's parents owned houses all across Warsaw. In 1916 when Irena was six, typhoid fever struck the city. Irena's father kept helping those who contracted it. Later in 1916, Stanislaw caught the disease. On February 10 1917, Irena's father died.
