On board the USS Chatelain, Soundman Ray Watts was listening to a stack of screens. It was the sonar hut and Watts was doing what he had been trained to do. Both he and his back up had great hearing.
At 11:10 am, Watts heard a loud and sharp ping.
The officer of the deck walked over. " What's the matter Watts?".
" Something's out there". Another loud ping. " Two maybe three thousand yards away".
" Sound general quarters".
Another loud ping.
" Contact 080".
" Inform Commander Knox".
35 year old Skipper Dudley Knox knew he better inform Captain Gallery on the Guadalcanal.
" Frenchy to Bluejay". Commander Knox's voice hesitated. " I have a possible sound contact".
