Gettysburg 2026 page 1 by ric gustafson
In March 1862, Confederate President Jefferson Davis brought a former army officer to Richmond. His name was Robert E Lee. Davis made Lee his military adviser.
In May of 1862, an army led by Major General George McClellan was at the gates of Richmond. Defending the Confederate capital was General Joseph E Johnston. When Johnston became wounded, Davis promoted Lee to save the capital. Lee used an offensive. He turned back McClellan's army.
Then Lee won battle after battle. This included the Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville.
Near the Rappahannock River at Falmouth, the Union General in charge of Chancellorsville was reeling from the defeat. His name was Major General Joseph Hooker.
