By 1939, Judy Garland was a veteran leading lady. She was only 16 years old. The public saw her as a child star. Because of her musical comedies with Mickey Rooney, Mervyn LeRoy and Arthur Freed suggested her for the role of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. Studio chief Louis B Mayer's choice for Dorothy was Shirley Temple. Fox refused to loan her out to MGM. The role went to Judy Garland. Because of her performance, she won the Academy Juvenile Award. Garland was Dorothy Gale.
