a night to remember page 5 by ric Gustafson
Captain Smith was a 38 year veteran of the White Star Line. He had a sense of urbanity and firmness. He was a natural leader. He sent Fourth Officer Boxhall to quickly inspect the liner. Carpenter J Hutchinson and Mail Clerk Iago Smith came back with Boxhall. They told the Captain about how fast the liner was already taking in water. Then Bruce Ismay came to the bridge. Captain Smith told him the bad news. Thomas Andrews came and took a tour of the ship with Captain Smith. What they noticed stunned them. There was a 300 foot gash affecting the first five watertight compartments. Water would go over into the remaining compartments. The liner was doomed.
Captain Smith ordered the lifeboats uncovered. He ordered Murdoch to inform the passengers. Then Captain Smith walked down to the wireless shack. This was a night to remember.
