After Stephen's death, Saul was given a new task. He became a chief agent for the Jewish authorities. He became the High Priest's representative. Saul's task was to bring in men and women who followed that dead carpenter.

Early church leaders of the Way fled or were in hiding. Saul brought them in. They were dragged in front of a formal inquiry. Saul demanded that they curse this dead carpenter named Jesus. 

People who were captured by Saul told him that Jesus was their Savior and their Lord. Saul found out that many followers of this dead carpenter had escaped to Damascus in Syria. Saul asked permission to go there and bring back as many prisoners as he could. Saul was granted permission.

Saul decided to leave in the spring for Damascus.
